Guest Post: Help Us Fight the Flu

Today, Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary of the US Department of Health and Human Services, joins us to talk about fighting the flu! (Would you believe it’s STILL not too late to get a shot!?!)
As part of our National Influenza Vaccination Week, we wanted to spread the word to seniors about the importance of getting the H1N1 vaccine. There’s no question that getting the vaccine is the best way to avoid getting the flu. The vaccine will help protect yourself, and your loved ones, from getting H1N1.
This flu season has been more challenging than most, and it is far from over. Flu season typically lasts until May, and we don’t know whether there will be additional waves of flu illness. H1N1 is still circulating, it’s still dangerous, and there are still lives to be saved. That’s why it’s so critical for everyone to get vaccinated. While people 65 and older are less likely to contract H1N1 than other age groups, they are at higher risk for flu-related complications if they do contract it.
I got my H1N1 vaccine, and it’s time now for seniors — who stepped aside so younger, higher-risk people could be vaccinated — to come get the vaccine, too. We made getting vaccinated as easy as possible. We have an easy-to-use tool on Flu.gov that allows you to find the nearest location to get the H1N1 and seasonal flu vaccines. It’s easy. Just type in your zip code, and find the locations nearest you that offer the vaccines.
Thank you for helping us fight the flu. Together, we can make sure that our families and our communities remain healthy. If you’re on Facebook, take a look at our new Flu Fighter Application. This application gives people a fun way to encourage friends and family to get vaccinated. Become a Flu Fighter by trying out the application, and visit our Facebook page, to become a fan of fighting the flu.
