I had never even heard of this before, but now that I know about it, I want nothing more than to do it someday! It’s the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa, or RAGBRAI, and it takes place every year (and has for the past 38 years) – and it’s exactly what it sounds like. Some 10,000 cyclists biking across the state of Iowa for a week!
I came across this blog post on Politics Daily.com and had to find out more. The best part was that the average age of these riders this year was 44 – and 39 percent of the riders were over 50! The ride is about 440 miles across the state, with campgrounds in various small towns providing a place to set up for the night, along with restaurant specials and beer gardens to make it one big party across Iowa.
The blog post also talks about the health benefits of cycling – and getting in shape enough to cycle that far! I, myself, am not a cyclist, but I might take up the venture to do something as fun as this sounds.
Not into cycling either? Check out this AARP.org article from AARP Health and Fitness Ambassador Martina Navratilova on how to take up cycling to get fit!
Think you could ride across an entire state in a week??
