Shrimp on treadmills? Or your benefits?

Hey all!  I wanted to introduce myself – I’m going to be blogging about politics and AARP’s grassroots campaigns.  I’ve been working for about 8 years in the advocacy and non-profit arena – but this is my first time blogging – yay!

So, let’s get down to it.  Today AARP launched a new television ad as part of our Protect Seniors campaign.  Take a look and tell us what you think!

The ad may have some funny moments (pickle technology?!), but the message is serious.  We’re urging Congress not to make any deal to pay the nation’s bills that would result in harmful cuts to critical Medicare and Social Security benefits that millions of Americans have earned through a lifetime of hard work.

What Congress decides in the next few weeks could determine whether you can afford to go to the doctor, or even pay for medicine you need to stay healthy.

It’s up to all of us to remind them that cuts could harm millions of real people — people who are more than just numbers on a balance sheet.

Congress needs to keep its priorities straight, and make responsible decisions about fixing the deficit. They need to focus on holding down health costs, eliminating wasteful spending and closing tax loopholes, not cutting the benefits millions rely on. But they won’t do it unless they hear from you.

To date, nearly 1.5 million individuals have signed a petition to Congress, and nearly 260,000 calls and emails have gone into congressional offices urging them to protect Medicare and Social Security from harmful cuts as part of a deal to raise the debt ceiling.  THANK YOU.  But more needs to be done.  Watch the new ad, then join the fight to protect Medicare and Social Security!
