Buckle Your Seatbelt for Older Driver Safety Awareness Week

This Monday marks the official start of Older Driver Safety Awareness Week.
Sponsored by the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), the week (Dec. 5 -9) aims to raise awareness of older driver-related issues and provides information, tools, and resources to help drivers everywhere stay safe and confident on the road.
According to AOTA, “With increasing age come changes in physical, mental and sensory abilities that can challenge a person’s continued ability to drive safely. But there are a variety of safe travel options for people of all ages. The real need is a broader awareness of the solutions, rather than a narrow focus on the problem.”
Throughout the week, AOTA and AARP Driver Safety will call attention to a different aspect of older driver safety:
The first step in addressing older driver issues is to have a conversation with the older driver. To kick off the week, we, along with The Hartford, are hosting a free online webinar called “Family Conversations with Older Drivers: We Need to Talk” from 4 to 5 p.m. EST Monday, Dec. 5. Geared toward adults with aging loved ones, this webinar will help address the difficult, but important question: How do you know if it’s time for your loved one to limit or stop driving?
Whether you’re interested in picking up a few safety tips for yourself, or you’re worried about a parent or relative-the tools and information provided during Older Driver Safety Awareness Week can help.
