Lifetime’s ‘Army Wives’ hits milestone this weekend

It doesn’t generate the volume of buzz that some other cable dramas do , but Lifetime’s Army Wives has legions of devoted fans. On Sunday night, the show, which centers around the significant others of soldiers stationed at fictional Fort Marshal, airs its 100th episode. It’s a significant milestone for Army Wives, which has become a real warhorse for Lifetime on its way to its centennial airing. The show, based on the book Under the Sabers: The Unwritten Code of Army Wives by Tanya Blank, is finishing up its sixth season and has yet to be renewed for a seventh, leading to some fretting among its followers. Those folks probably won’t be happy to read that Sunday night’s show feels a little bit like the beginning of the end, with several characters undergoing life-changing events. With only three shows left before the season six finale, it could be that the writers are starting to wrap things up, just in case the ax falls.
Whatever its fate, it’s already been a very successful run for the show, which has revitalized the careers of stars Kim Delaney (NYPD Blue, Philly) and Catherine Bell (JAG) and provided meaningful roles for a bevy of veteran actors. Perhaps more importantly, over its six-season run it has established Lifetime as a viable place for viewers to find smart, adult drama, and we can never have too many of those.
The 100th episode of Army Wives airs Sunday night at 10 p.m. on Lifetime. Check local listings for channel information. For those new to the show, the first five seasons of Army Wives are available on DVD, through instant streaming via Netflix or for download at iTunes and other online outlets.
