The Gummer Girls Follow Mom Into Acting

Grace Gummer is following in her famous mother's footsteps.

Grace Gummer plays a reporter in ‘The Newsroom.’

If you’ve been watching The Newsroom on HBO this season, you may have noticed something familiar about the young actress who plays Hallie Shea, one of the reporters following Mitt Romney through the Republican primaries of 2012.

She is played by Grace Gummer, 27, and she is the second of Meryl Streep‘s daughters to take up her mother’s profession. Grace’s older sister, Mamie, 30, a Northwestern University graduate, starred in last year’s short-lived CW show Emily Owens, M.D., makes occasional appearances as a wiley laywer on CBS’ The Good Wife and will appear this fall opposite Kristen Bell in the film The Lifeguard. Mamie also played a younger version of her mom’s character in the 2007 film Evening.

The Gummer girls are the eldest of Streep’s four children, now between 22 and 34, with her husband of 35 years, Don Gummer, a sculptor. Grace Gummer’s turn on Aaron Sorkin’s HBO drama is the Vassar grad’s highest-profile TV role yet. But she made her Broadway debut in 2011  in Tom Stoppard’s play Arcadia. Since then, she’s landed TV roles in shows like Smash and Zero Hour.
