Get the Facts on the New Healthcare Law

A lot of people seem confused about the new Affordable Care Act (ACA). And with so many rumors and misinformation swirling around, it’s not surprising that many don’t know where to turn for answers.
First, some basics: The ACA improves the quality and affordability of health care, and ends discriminatory insurance practices that have kept people from accessing coverage in the past. It requires insurance companies to cover all applicants regardless of age, gender or pre-existing conditions, and stops them from dropping your coverage if you become ill. Bottom line: If you have insurance , the law has new benefits and protections that will help secure your family’s health and finances; and for those who are uninsured there are new ways of finding a plan that will fit your needs and options to get financial help in covering the costs. The health care law will also strengthen Medicare, and help provide new protections and benefits as well.
So now that we see the big picture, like you, I want to know what this new law means for me, my family, and my future. A recent national survey from LatinoDecisions.com reported that in the Hispanic market knowledge regarding the ACA is very low. The study shows that while English-speaking Latinos are more likely to express that they are informed about the ACA, 42 percent of English dominant Latinos remain uninformed about it. As a Latina, I am concerned about this problem, and am always looking for ways to spread facts about the health law.
AARP recently launched a new, and easy to use online health tool created specifically for consumers. The new tool: HealthLawAnswers.org , also available in Spanish: MiLeyDeSalud.org , is designed for you to get customized information about the health law based on where you live, family size, gender, income, and insurance status. The tool will let you know what benefits may be available to you, and where to find more information. This offers direct answers to the questions you may have, whether you are insured, uninsured, or even on Medicare.
So try not to get caught up listening to the media rumor-mill. It’s time to clear up the myths and fears, and look at the real benefits of the health care law. AARP has plenty of resources to help you answer your questions about insurance and even Medicaid . The best way to be prepared is to be informed.
