Joan Lunden, one of TV’s most celebrated talk show hosts and news anchors, revealed June 24 that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer.
“I heard those words that every woman fears and never wants to hear: ‘You have breast cancer,’ ” Lunden, 63, told Robin Roberts on Good Morning America, a show Lunden cohosted from 1980 to 1997.
Lunden learned the diagnosis after a tumor was identified in an ultrasound exam that has routinely followed her annual mammogram.
“Nothing showed in my mammogram, and you come out of there like, ‘Yes, one more year. I’m OK,’ ” said Lunden, a mother of seven. “And then you go all happy-go-lucky into the ultrasound and she kept going back to one spot.”
Further testing showed that Lunden had an “aggressive” kind of cancer. Lunden explained that she has already started chemotherapy, but would also require surgery and radiation before full recovery would be possible.
After decades in television, Lunden moved on to a career of health advocacy. She said the memory of her late father, a cancer surgeon, inspired her to share her story.
