Al Pacino is a legendary rock star. Annette Bening is a hotel manager who gives him the brush-off. The two have a friendly — but decidedly rocky — first meeting in this exclusive clip from their new movie Danny Collins, opening March 20.
Pacino plays the title character, who’s been living off the glory (and royalties) of his greatest hits for decades. But then a collector finds a letter written to Danny by John Lennon in 1971 — a letter Danny never received.

The discovery shocks Danny into reconsidering his entire life, from the inconsequential songs that made him famous to the son (Bobby Cannavale) he abandoned long ago. He cancels his latest greatest-hits tour and checks into a New Jersey hotel, where he begins preparing to hit the “Reset” button on his life.
Danny also plans to hit it off with the hotel’s charming and quick-witted manager (Bening), whose good-natured rejections of his advances intrigue him all the more.
Danny Collins was inspired by a true story: Lennon really did write an encouraging letter to a singer-songwriter named Steve Tilston in 1970, but it was not delivered to him until 2010. The film also unfolds to a soundtrack of wonderful John Lennon songs. It was written and directed by Dan Fogelman, who wrote two instant-classic films for Disney — Cars and Tangled — as well as the thoughtful and funny Crazy, Stupid Love; The Guilt Trip; and Last Vegas.
