Exclusive Video: Kevin Costner in ‘Black or White’

One of the highlights of last fall’s Movies for Grownups Film Festival in Los Angeles was Kevin Costner telling us about his passion for his film Black or White, costarring Octavia Spencer.

Costner stars as a widowed Los Angeles lawyer locked in a custody battle with the child’s maternal grandmother (Spencer), who insists the young girl would be better off living with her African American relatives. The subject matter easily could have resulted in two hours of nonstop preaching, but writer-director Mike Binder manages to walk a delicate tightrope: In his hands, Black or White is moving, thought-provoking — and often very funny. (As this clip notes, Binder is also an accomplished stand-up comedian.)

Now, as Black or White comes to DVD/Blu-ray from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, here’s an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at Binder in the act of directing Costner and other cast members in the film — notably Anthony Mackie, who costars as Spencer’s brother (and lawyer), and Mpho Koaho, who plays the young girl’s tutor.
