Food | Money & SavingsAh, spring is in the air. It’s time to ditch the snow shovel, stow the sweaters and mittens in the closet, and put away your slow cooker (aka Crock-Pot) until next fall. Try more slow cooker recipes Hey, wait just a daylight saving time minute! The slow cooker isn’t just the cheapskate’s cooking appliance of choice for cold weather comfort food. It’s truly a frugal cooking machine for all seasons. In this week’s episode of my YouTube web show “The …

Do Online Deals Really Save You Money?

Posted on 03/12/2013 by | The Ultimate Cheapskate | Comments

Money & SavingsIt’s been interesting to watch as the millennial generation has rushed to embrace its own 21st century version of penny-pinching. At least in our family, these are the same twentysomethings who only a few years ago rolled their eyes at us “old folks” as we religiously clipped our coupons from the Sunday newspaper and gladly drove an extra block or two to save four cents on a gallon of gas. Apparently now that saving a buck involves mobile devices and online social …

Study: Coupon Use Decreases Among Consumers

Posted on 03/5/2013 by | The Ultimate Cheapskate | Comments

Money & SavingsI read about an interesting survey last week by NCH Marketing Services that may be cause for a cheapskate celebration. The survey results seem to indicate that more Americans are wising up and are less inclined to buy something they don’t really need simply because they “have a coupon for it.”  According the NCH survey, while manufacturers circulated a near-record 305 billion coupons in 2012, the number of coupons actually used by consumers dropped by about 17 percent compared to …

Home & Family | Money & SavingsSpending money to save even more money is usually a lead-pipe cinch: that’s an expression my generation used before there was such a thing as a “no-brainer.” When it comes to investing in home improvements designed to save on utility costs, while the payoff for installing things like solar panels or new energy efficient windows may indeed be worth it in the long run, the upfront investment can be chilling. Trash Can Autopsy Offers Answers to Wasting Food, Money

Posted on 02/19/2013 by | The Ultimate Cheapskate | Comments

Money & SavingsA few weeks ago a family of raccoons made the rounds in our neighborhood one night, laying waste to the garbage cans we’d all set out for collection the following morning. As I joined the impromptu cleanup posse (a “trash mob” as opposed to a “flash mob”), it was interesting to see the differences in each household’s garbage. Slideshow: Are You Throwing Money Away? As I’ve written about before and as you’ll see in the latest episode of my weekly …

Spend Less, Love More This Valentine’s Day

Posted on 02/12/2013 by | The Ultimate Cheapskate | Comments

Money & Savings | RelationshipsMore Americans are apparently going to be saying amore for a-lesse this Valentine’s Day. According to a just-released survey by PriceGrabber.com, Americans are saying they plan to scale back their Valentine’s Day spending. While about half of those surveyed say they plan to spend about the same amount as last year, only 62 percent said they’ll spend up to $100 this Valentine’s Day, a decrease from 68 percent in 2012. And 55 percent said that the lackluster economy will indeed …
