Whether this is your first, second or third marriage after 50 do it your way. I’ve been married three times to date. Eight years ago this month a sequin pencil skirt and a white cashmere top was my “wedding dress” at the local justice of the peace — big change from that first fairytale gown and huge tented affair in 1971. I’ve learned a lot since then, so here are a few things grownup brides need to know:

SKIP THE FRILLS AND FROU-FROU. You don’t want to go the big-deal tulle and lace princess route. Keep it simple, keep it “you” and accent one best body feature like great legs, toned arms, sexy shoulders or a perfect sun-damage free decolletage.   For example when Jersey trucking heiress Nancy Shevell married Paul McCartney in 2011, she was 51, he was 69 (it was her second, his third). She wore a tailored long sleeve body-skimming dress that highlighted her trim long legs and tiny waist.  Barbra Streisand (who married James Brolin when she was 56) strategically played up cleavage. Ellen DeGeneres (at 55) stuck to her signature boyishly trim look in dress pants, a silky shirt and tailored vest when she married Portia de Rossi in 2008. All three got it right and kept to their style.

WEAR WHITE.  I know you’re tempted to show your confidence and spirit in shocking pink or red but do yourself a favor.  White will make you look rested, healthy and radiant in person … and in all those photos and videos. You’ll thank me for this later. Then follow two other crucial but confidence boosting tips. Swipe on a fast-dry quick-color self-tanner like Sonia Kashuk Face & Body Golden Tanning Towelettes ($10.49,target.com). Go head-to-toe to bump up the glow and hide all brown spots, veins and sun-damage. But that only partly captured the allure and the artistry of Kenneth Battelle, for whom the term “hair stylist to the stars” would have been an understatement. Battelle, who died on May 13 at age 86 in Wappingers Falls, N.Y., was perhaps the first coiffure creator to become an international celebrity in his own right, one with so much juice that Glamour magazine reportedly boosted its circulation simply by mentioning his name on the cover. Over the years, Battelle’s clientete sounded like the invitee list for an Academy Awards telecast: Marilyn Monroe, Judy Garland, Lauren Bacall, Audrey Hepburn, and Lucille Ball (who referred to Battelle as “God”) were among a few of the Hollywood stars who went to him in an effort to look sufficiently glamorous on the red carpet.

Just as great painters tend to be known for a single masterpiece, Battelle had his signature coiffure: the gracefully billowy bouffant that he created in 1954 for the wife of a rising junior U.S. senator from Massachusetts. Jacqueline Kennedy turned to the then-unknown Battelle only because her regular stylist had called in sick. According to a 2003 Vanity Fair profile, Battelle, with remarkable boldness, decided that Mrs. Kennedy’s short, layered, frizzy “Italian cut” wasn’t right for her height and bone structure. Instead, he persuaded her that she should let that hairstyle grow out and go for a totally different look.

In the months that followed, Battelle stretched out Jackie’s hair, using special large-sized curlers that he had custom made, and gave it a more relaxed, natural appearance. The remarkable makeover transformed Battelle into a sought-after talent. He developed a special technique for making hair look soft and full, which involved wetting it and affixing clips to sections to separate them, while he snipped at them with blunt scissors.

Here are 10 intriguing facts about Battelle:

• Battelle, a native of Syracuse who served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, became a stylist when he was forced to drop out of college for lack of funds. He was enticed by a beauty school advertisement promising that anyone who graduated would earn $100 per week.

• His first job was at the decidedly déclassé Starlet Beauty Bar, a beauty parlor across from a Greyhound Bus station in Syracuse, where many of his clients were hookers.

• Battelle helped repair Marilyn Monroe’s hair, which had been damaged by excessive bleaching, and persuaded her to allow him to straighten it. “When you have a blob of curly platinum hair, that’s all you can see,” People quotes him as explaining. “You don’t see the beautiful face.”

• In 1963 he opened his own salon in a mansion at 19 East 54th Street in Manhattan, whose ornate decorations included marble Corinthian columns and a cascading staircase. Maids served clients lunch and tea on Porthault trays and lit aromatic Rigaud candles while they propped the customers’  feet on pillows. “I believe in coddle, coddle, coddle,” he explained to Vogue.

• After a fire destroyed his salon in the mid-1980s, he eventually relocated it to the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel.

• At the apex of his popularity, a new high-society client might wait three months to get an appointment with him.

• He complained that the famous actresses and social butterflies who came to him sometimes wouldn’t trust in his imagination. “They say, ‘Do anything you want,’ and then come all the ifs, ands, and buts,” he explained in 1963. “That’s why models are so wonderful to work with — they’re not afraid to experiment.”

• During the Kennedy administration, his work on the First Lady’s hair led some wags to dub him the “Secretary of Grooming.”

• He once told New York magazine that salons should be glamorous places where “people [run] around in mud packs and [come] in with their Russian wolfhounds.”

• He explained the challenge of hairdressing to the Times in 1961: “Each head has a different texture, a different face to frame and a different personality to work with — all of these things go into creating a coiffure. It’s not just knowing how to put in a lot of rollers.”

On May 12 the Style Network will debut XOX Betsey Johnson (8 p.m. ET), a reality show/style documentary that follows the eclectic 70-year-old party girl and her 38-year-old daughter, Lulu, as they navigate their businesses, experience bankruptcy and work on their mother-daughter relationship.

Viewers will get a sneak peek into the daily operations of Betsy’s clothing line and meet some of the people that support and encourage her career. The ever-energetic Betsey took a minute to reveal some things that you and I may not know about her.

1. Neon Day-Glo highlighter pink is my color of choice!

2. I like salted almonds.

3. When people ask me if I cook, I respond “What’s that??”

4. I hate driving.

5. Former beach home, Betseyville, is for sale.

6. “The Bitch is Back,” by Elton John is my favorite song.

7. My dad was a mechanical engineer and my mom was a high school guidance director.

8. I’m the black sheep in the middle of an older sister and younger brother.

9. I LOVE cheerleading and following Rafael Nadal on TV for tennis.

10. My first job was at Mademoiselle magazine.

11. I’ve been in the fashion business for 48 years!!

12. Paraphernalia Fall 1965 and my first Betsey Johnson punk line in 1978 were my favorite collections.

13. I do cartwheels after every show because it makes me feel good and happy. Now people expect it.

14. Brandon Aldridge, my design assistant, was my young, cute intern 10 years ago, and we’ve been working together since.

15. My daughter Lulu and my granddaughters Layla and Ella are my inspiration.

16. I’m teaching them (grandchildren) how to add the tip to the dinner bill and forge my signature…

17. “Stay true to yourself” is the advice I share with Lulu and others.

18. I’m most proud of my family and my success.

19. Lastly, I’m looking for husband #4.5.

Many of you know Jane Seymour as the actress behind Michaela Quinn, the strong lead character in the hit ’90s television series, Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman. What you may not know is that Seymour has evolved to become a brand that includes a clothing line, home accessories, floral designs, books and starter painting kits.  I connected with the busy entrepreneur, who hasn’t completely given up acting, to talk about her latest endeavor, which (hint, hint )would make a great Mother’s Day gift.

Why did you start designing jewelry and why is it called Open Hearts?
JS: I began to adopt a certain philosophy during a difficult period in my life when I was painting and noticed that the hearts I painted were always open.  I came to realize that this reflected my mother’s advice that love should have no boundaries and should flow unconditionally.  This led me to create a symbol that mirrored my mother’s advice that only when you can love yourself and keep your heart open can you best give and receive love.

I made my open hearts design into a necklace before I started competing on Dancing With the Stars and, from that experience, I was inspired to create an jewelry collection titled “Open Hearts by Jane Seymour.” This line reflects all of life’s experiences—joys, heartbreaks and inspirations.

Who is the inspiration behind your collection?
JS: My mother – Mieke Frankenberg– whose advice “If your heart is open, love will always find its way in,” I gleaned from. In addition to her wisdom, I have been strengthened through the years by the incredible people I’ve met that have not only overcome adversity in their lives but also worked to improve the lives of those around them. From dear friends like Christopher Reeve and Robin Roberts to the amazing fans who send me their stories every day, I am constantly inspired and humbled by the amazing accomplishments of so many.

This continued inspiration has led to the creation of the Open Hearts Foundation, a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to spreading the open heart philosophy into communities worldwide. The foundation provides funds to charitable organizations in the areas of health, arts, education and sports, and honors individuals who exemplify the open heart philosophy in their service to others.

What type of woman do you envision wearing your pieces?
JS: The great thing about the line is that it truly offers something for everyone at every age. It has a universal appeal in that each design has a unique meaning that enables each woman who wears it to connect with the piece in a special way while reflecting the cherished relationships in her life.

With Mother’s Day coming up soon, which piece would you recommend for a mother, wife and/or grandmother?
JS: Open Hearts Family!  This new collection represents a design evolution of the artwork and an extension of the philosophy. It celebrates the traditional family unit, but also the extended families that we create from the people we open our hearts to as we journey through life.

And your favorite piece is…
JS: A necklace that includes both a big heart and little heart connected, which signifies the bond of mother and child or grandchild.

IT’S A MYTH THE BULK OF THE DAMAGE IS DONE BY NOW. Dr. Day says, “Your skin has an amazing ability to repair itself if you stop insulting it with sun exposure, use the right products and work on recovery. Do yourself a favor and locate a dermatologist in your zip code who has the new diagnostic skin cancer device called MelaFind. I use it to help identify which suspicious moles should be biopsied for melanoma since it can see way under the skin’s surface for a three dimensional view. MelaFind uses multi-spectral light technology to analyze and separate unusual non-cancerous moles from potential deadly ones  in a non invasive way and all data is stored for future tracking electronically. Patients get a printout of all info and visual imaging. It saves women from unnecessary biopsy scarring.”

IF YOU DON’T NEED A FLASHLIGHT YOU NEED SUN PROTECTION.  Dr. Day says “Use a broad spectrum SPF 30 + even on cloudy days 365 days a year. Aging UVA and burning UVB rays come through too when the weather is grey or cold. Always do your face, neck  (and sides of the neck not just the front part- women neglect to include this area), chest backs of hands and legs. If you’re wearing a dress or skirt with bare legs (even to work) you need to do them too. The sun is not selective and many melanomas are found on legs.” Reapply sunscreen every hour and a half in the sun or when driving or working indoors near a window. UVA rays go right through glass.

ALL NEW BROAD SPECTRUM SUNSCREENS ARE OTC DRUGS.  Dr. Days says ” All new sunscreens  must pass a specific test to show they protect against UVA and UVB rays to get FDA approval so toss  last year’s leftovers.  Buy a fresh broad spectrum sunscreen of at least 30. ” It’s your decision whether to opt for a physical block with titanium dioxide and zinc oxide or a chemical mix with active ingredients like helioplex, avobenzone, homosalate, octisalate, octocrylene and oxybenzone. Buying the right formula, texture and format are important too. I love the way Bo Derek, 56 and Lauren Hutton, 69 are aging but I actually have no idea what these former sun tanners do to look so amazing. We all have friends, colleagues and neighbors who look suspiciously good these days too. Is it a facelift? Lasers? Fillers? Maybe, but the real secret might be retinol — the non prescription alternative to Rx Retin-A.  I know what you’re thinking; lots of us still have bad memories about  retinoids. Use strategy to get your daily dose of retinol but complement it with other de-aging ingredients like antioxidants to combat free radicals, niacinamide (vitamin B3) to even out skin tone, peptides and vitamin C to boost collagen. Jaliman said, “I approach skin care like a healthy balanced diet. A mix of veggies, fruit and lean protein is going to provide the nutrients you need for optimum health and great skin. It works the same way with de-aging skin care. I believe in mixing different products to get the best results.” You might choose to use a retinol product at night and peptides with antioxidants for day or vice versa, for example.

BE RETINOL SMART. Jaliman said, “Stay off retinol two days prior to waxing, microdermabrasion or a glycolic peel and avoid it altogether if you have rosacea or eczema. Always apply an SPF sunscreen for day or choose a moisturizer with a broad spectrum SPF, even for walking the dog or driving to do errands.”  You do still need a daily broad spectrum sunscreen (as always with retinoids) but be realistic — you need one anyway 365 days a year to avoid UVA rays! New York magazine nailed it when it labeled fashion designer Catherine Malandrino as the “ultimate Frenchwoman in America.” And like her peer Marc Jacobs, she, too, turned the big 5-Oh this month (April 22). Malandrino’s design concept has always been “to bring softness and refinement to an urban, feminine wardrobe and to help the woman show her character and individuality through her unique clothes.” And it has worked for her as evidenced by her successful career both in her native France and the United States for more than 12 years. Malandrino has earned some cachet: Madonna has worn one of the designer’s pieces from her “Flag” collection and Malandrino’s boutique has appeared in the TV hit Sex and the City. Now that she is an international phenomon within the luxury fashion market, she’s experimenting with bringing her aesthetic to the masses. This fall, Malandrino will team up with Kohl’s department stores as their third designer to participate in DesignNation, a series of collections that reflects influences from global destinations on a designer’s aesthetic. The 80-piece collection will draw from her recent trip to Paris and pieces will sell from $36 to $130 in Kohl’s stores and online. Congrats to Malandrino on her birthday and success with her new line!
