Supersize It (Category: Financial Security)
I mentioned it last night briefly when talking about the State of the Union, but it looks like chapter one of the tale of the economic stimulus package could unfold later today with an anticipated vote in the House.
In the current environment, with so many people concerned about their finances and the economy, we need relief that is quick and helps those who need it the most. And the Senate plan super sizes what the House has put on the table. It would help approximately 20 million Americans who primarily depend on Social Security for retirement income AND also enhance unemployment insurance, which is critical for 50+ workers who have a more difficult time finding new employment after a job loss.
Word today is that both Democrats and Republicans are getting behind the Senate bill, which is good news. Maybe they can break through the partisan gridlock and actually pass something.

I think that as long as our greedy congress is handing out our hard earned dollars and accepting their pay raises - people on social security should be receiving some pittance also.

How much, truly, will the individual benefit from with the stimulus package? What, truly, will a few hundred dollars do for each of us other than a momentary spend? Only to have to pay it back in multiples, ultimately. Sorry to be so cynical about the offer.

It is not a secret tht we are all living longer lives thanks to preventative medicine and the advances made in medicine. Those of us that are heading toward 65 and those of us who are over retirement age need to be included in all and any further economic stimulus packages to keep up with the basic necessities in life. Every thing is going up. We are all tired of partisan gridlock. Lets not leave the "Greatest Generation" behind.

The seniors who pay taxes get a rebate undet the house plan. If you haven't paid any taxes, why would you get a rebate? Why should the taxpayers foot the bill for a handout to people who voted us into this social security mess in the first place?

I worked very hard and full time from age 19 to age 60, and now that I am disabled I am being hit hard by the current economic conditions. I was a taxpayer for over 40 years. Do you really think that I deserve to be left out now because I can no longer work?

Those in retirement, and those under $3000 of yearly income will get nothing in this so-called stimulus package. The people who need it the most get the least. Well, that figures. That's the way this government has been for some time. I'm tired of that. I'm still earning (a little bit longer till I can retire), so it doesn't directly affect me, but it sure does my elderly mother, and so many other people that I know. We need the version that the senate is proposing which extends benefits to those groups that I just mentioned, and which extends unemployment benefits to those in need.

Kenneth Riott says:
This is supposed to be a stimulus package not a Tax break for big business or the wealthy. For more bang for the buck the rebates should also go to us the People on Social Security that don't file taxes and extend unemployment benefits . All that money will go right back into the economy. Seriously does any one believe Companies are going to expand production and hire people when the people aren't buying or can't afford to buy stuff? In slow times companies reduce inventory not increase it and lay off not hire.

Victor Goff says:
Since older Americans, like myself, pay taxes, why have we been excluded from the rebates proposed by President Bush and the House of Representatives? We should be included in any final plan. It's bad enough that Bill Clinton caused us to include up to 85% of our Social Security checks in our adjusted gross income. We ask the Senate and the rest of the Congress to DO THE RIGHT THING.

Apparently politicians acknowledge four (4) classs of individuals in the earnings spectrum. 1) Upper Class 2) Middle Class 3) Lower Class, and lastly 4) Last Class. Last class is composed of senior citizens who spent the majority of their lives paying taxes and are now subjected to living in poverty (social security) with the blessings of our government. Hence, raises in social security payments at about half of the actual cost of living increases and being left out of the newest stimulus package. Guess they will just have to find another way to pay for their medicines, food, and energy costs.

Rather than handing back this one-time rebate on our taxes, why can't The World's Greatest Deliberative Body engineer a tax cut that lets us keep our own money to save and invest? Why can't they stop squandering our tax dollars on stupid, wasteful, perverse boondoggles?
We all want someone else to pay our medical bills and provide for our retirement, but that someone else turns out to be us. All the programs that Washington and AARP love so much just lead us further and further into bankruptcy.

Raj Oberoi says:
Dear Congressmen, & Senators,
We are surprised to read in newspapers that President Bush has proposed stimulus package to give checks to those people who receve checks and suggested few categories for check distribution.
All those seniors who live only on their limited social security are facing more hardship than who are going to receive checks under this plan. Social security checks should be consider as the paychecks for the seniors.
We suggest you to include all seniors who receive Social Security. Seniors have difficulty to work, 1. Employers are not giving jobs to them, 2. The necessarily items (GAS, Electric, Water, Food Items, and Clothes) are becoming more expensive, 3. Medical bills and Madison out of pocket cost has gone up 4. The transportation cast has gone up.
Seniors in this country need money more than than the people who will receive money from this stimulus packet. The seniors in need of money when their every bill is going high.
Please include all seniors in this package. We will remember you during election time.
Thank you.

There is probably no group that needs some encouragement to spend
than seniors living on Social Security. With the price of gas and food going up, and fuel bills getting higher, seniors on fixed income, especially when that income is only social security, have a real struggle, and could use a boost to purchase some of the things they can no longer afford. They were taxpayers too for many years and should be entitled to some help too.

What’s wrong with the USA!
Written: Thursday, May 10, 2000
What is wrong with the USA Today? Many things, but the following involves most Americans:
President Bush is STEALING Billions/Trillions from our Social Security Coffer and nothing is being done to STOP him! This is our Retirement! If only FDR was still around!
Unemployment: Why are millions of Americans unemployed? Answer: Outsourcing: so the CEO’s, Presidents/Board members can line their pockets while they are destroying American lives, complete towns and cities are drying up, because there are so many persons unemployed, leads to horrible situations taking place today in our towns and cities. Cause for Unemployment: OUTSOURCING: Shutting down USA Companies and sending the jobs overseas. We could train other countries to make their own products, they can have there own jobs for their own country - and we need our jobs back! Why are sporting players being paid MILLIONS $$$ to play games? While most persons that work hard get paid pennies in comparison.
Costing: Why are there NO steps being taken to stop EVERYTHING that is constantly climbing so high, that no one will be able to survive because they will not be able to purchase anything? Gas is just an example. There are more vehicles and drivers, which means more gas is being sold, which means someone is making more money, why does the price have to continue to keep climbing. What are their excuses? Nothing but lies, constantly running circles around the truth. What did it cost to purchase a home in the 70’s? The same exact home is being sold today for $200-400K, NO improvements, and the same old home that is 30+ years old. Foreclosures will take banks down! No Controls!
The USA is being destroyed before our eyes and NO-ONE is doing anything about it! Pure Greed is Destroying the USA!
Who should be paid the big bucks? Our Police/Nurses/Doctors/ Teachers: The persons that have to have college degrees and work jobs 24/7/365: Making how much $$. What are sporting personnel being paid to play games – how many millions each year to PLAY GAMES!!!!! What in the hell is going on? Does anyone care? Am I alone?
At this rate, no one will be able to purchase anything and what is known, as the USA will fall. The only way to stop this is to stop the persons causing it. Since the Senators can’t……….
Social Security: If millions are unemployed - where is their income - are they putting income/money into Social Security? NO! Plus what right does Congress have to steal from our Social Security coffer? Our future is our SSN work over our lives, it is our retirement bank account – at least it was created for this reason, it’s certainly not that now, who changed the laws, who is allowing our money from our Social Security account to be removed by hundreds of millions at a time for what reasons. What is worse, what is going to be done about it, anything? Not the President and his dance around the truth. The Presidents reforms are too late – why didn’t he start in his first term?
One question for you: why has this taken so long? How long has President Bush been in charge? His plans are only band-aids - it will do nothing for what is causing what is wrong, he is running circles around the truth, all we are getting is snow balled! While him and his staffs are laughing while filling their bank accounts, which are filling their pockets? The Money Men running this planets Oil; Cartel, illuminati, and Skull & Bones that’s who!
TODAY Homeland Security vs. FEMA!
Katrina Disaster Rebuilding:
• If the sporting folks would provide 3% of their winnings/multiple millions a year to have fun playing games, to support the rebuilding of the dikes, it would pay for it over night. That’s just a dream and will never happen
• Have the US Army Corp of Engineers looked at what Japan has built to protect their cities from Typhoon’s and Tidal waves? That would be too easy; we don’t want another country helping us out with new designs that would work perfectly. Just another dream that will never happen
1. Corporations shutting down/closing their doors: WHY
2. Companies shutting down/closing their doors: WHY
3. Military Bases are being closed: WHY
4. Schools are being shut down/closed: WHY
5. The Cost of every thing going thru the roof: WHY
I know why, do you? Does anyone care, beside me? Or am I alone? This is taking place before our eyes – I cannot believe it and NO-ONE CARES!
It is time to OUTSOURCE the following:
President Bush/Vice President Cheney/Homeland Security Director/All CEO’s that have outsourced their Corporations/Company/All Staff responsible for moving FEMA under Homeland Security
The above personnel are destroying our Nation and nothings being done about it!
The persons responsible for attempting to give control of our US Ports to Arabs, while we are fighting terrorism should be all outsourced themselves, lets send them to the Middle East!
Homeland Security is for Anti-Terrorist USA
FEMA IS FOR Disasters: Mother Nature!
The President moved FEMA under Homeland Security – a Critical – Major Mistake – and all ready proven! I could run circles around the Homeland Security Director!

Please keep in mind; it does not matter where I live. I have worked in all 50 states, in most large cities.
What you are about to read is important to our Nation and Welfare.
In the 70’s a person could purchase a 2Bdrm home at $20K-50K most anywhere in the USA. Now thirty years later, it takes that much $ just to purchase a vehicle.
You are an AMERICAN: Drop the “Republicans/Democrats” We must fight together – we are all the same color, we are White, Red, & Blue: We are Americans!
The Nations is tired of the fighting
We must stand and fight for what is right, to make changes to make our nation - not stronger, but to stop what is taking place, it is being destroyed, where are persons like President FDR?
What has happened?
Why are sporting personal paid millions to play a game? Why is there no control? Why has the Senate and Congress allowed this to happen? What about your own children, what is going to happen to them in the future? Will there be any jobs left in the USA; I doubt it, because no one is doing anything to stop Outsourcing. Will your children be able to purchase anything? Will your children die, not having a job, not having enough income to live, to purchase the basics? I have been asking President Bush to do something, he has done nothing but destroy our nation. I asked Senator Kerry’s camp to listen; they did……and would have done something.
Now: US Portals, what is next? All jobs given to third world countries?
What does the Mafia think? What does the Long Shore Unions think?
What do you think about who ever moved FEMA under Homeland Security!
Before long, all jobs in America will be moved to (Third World Countries) OUTSOURCING is destroying our Nation! Other countries should handle their own countries products; we can support/train them.
Does ANYONE CARE? Homeland Security can’t handle any natural disaster; they think an Arabic county should handle our Nations shipping Ports, what is next? Your job and everyone else’s.
Who cares? I do, does anyone else? The Presidents Commission: Who are they? They are responsible for FEMA moved under Homeland Security; they are responsible for this US Portal Outsourcing! The Presidents denies any knowledge. That is very hard to believe, since it is his commission that is making decisions, destroying our nation’s capability to handle Homeland Security and Natural Disasters!
Who is responsible? President Bush is!

METH Lab Laws:
The USA requires a change in laws. What Drug Lords 92% of the drug dealers today are in small towns/townships/cities, they are in control! NOT a Drug Lord overseas! The Police across the USA are using the DEA’s/State Drug present laws that were made in our large cites where most of the drugs problems are because of Drug Lords. To stop a Meth lab, should not take 6 months. What proof do they need - the Meth lab is making drugs for a reason. What is happening to Americans, families, children lives? They are being destroyed by Meth labs built in towns, where good families live! Our nation’s rulings/laws/regulation has to change! Do something about this - Make a new law - that any Meth lab found, can be taken down immediately and not wait for a six-month investigation. What more proof do they require - they have the persons creating the drugs, they have the equipment they are using - what more do they want! Drug Law Proceeding: New law; Investigate any location the neighbors have complained about, test local air quality, use drug testing sensors, if found positive, take down the location immediately. Washington State should prove to the Nation that this will work, I know it will, we have to stop them (Bad Guys*Drug Manufactures)…..This is important PS: Our Fire Departments and Natural Gas departments have the sensors they use to detect leaking natural gases, guess what, this same detector also detects Meth Labs! USE IT!
PS: Someone MUST START IMPEACHMENT PRODEEDINGS!
PSS: I dare you to prove anything above wrong! I am waiting on your decision; do you want to save our Nation? Then please do something about it.
PSSS: You have my permission to copy/fax/scan/email or use these documents to throw darts at, to start a barbecue with, go to your roof and make paper planes and throw them over the edge or use a Rexel 4550 S6 Shredder. Please invite me to testify before your Senate/House committees.
The DOD is complaining about not having enough Scientist, Physics, Engineers, and College Degreed persons
My thoughts are the following:
College:
Third world countries charge their children/students – families how much $$ to go to school/college, compared to what it takes in the USA.
Families since the 70’s have been having problems paying how much $$$ for their children to enter into a college, how much does it cost-TODAY?
Why does it cost so much?
Who is doing anything to stop the costing to continue to climb, so high; it is a wonder that there are any American students in college. What families can afford to send more then one child to college if any?
Before long there will no students in college because the costing has gotten so high!
No wonder there are more students in foreign nations, they do not charge so much, they know it is important for their countries children to succeed and be able to climb the ladder.
• What has happened to America, does anyone care?
• Who can afford to live here in the future?
• What is going to happen to the families in the future?
• DOES ANYONE CARE? The White House/DOD/Federal Senators/Congress
• All KNOW IT and ARE DOING NOTHING TO STOP OUR NATION BEING DESTROYED BEFORE OUR EYES!
Schools USA wide, all states:
Open for classes all day, 8:30-5PM. Children are alone from 2:30 to 5PM or later, until the parents get home from there jobs, which they both have to work, because of the Costing problem. Children left alone for hours each school day, can get into trouble, the Bad Guys Know they are alone during this time.
I’m requesting all schools add two courses.
1. The first course: students are moved down to the last years teacher class, where they can help the teacher, which they have known for at least a year, helping this teacher with her/his daily work load, testing, the students can re-learn, can work in groups and in 1 hour, ensure the teacher is finished with the days work, so the teacher doesn’t have to take it home anymore.
2. The second course, the students return to their class. There they will work in groups, with the best student working with the students that need the most help (Math/English/History/language, etc) their teacher can support them while they are finishing their day’s homework. This will allow the teacher to work on her next day’s projects. When this last course is closed, it will be 5PM: The students are finished and don’t require going home with homework to do, the students are going home from a safe location (School) to another safe place (Home) where their parents should be home. The Teacher for the first time in their school teaching life can go home to his/her home and spend quality time with their families and not have to work on school work, because it’s finished.

Climate: Changes
I have watched the West coast from 1970 to present, major changes have occurred over the years, many, but I will inform you of just one: I was sent to Twenty-nine Palms USMC in 1970, it was horrible after living in the Pacific NW all my life. Sand everywhere, 117 degrees all day long, sand storms most every weekend for years, never stopping from 1970 to 1983. Then I noticed the Mojave Desert was getting some color, the humidity had raised, then NO MORE SAND STORMS! Why because the South Deserts are full of grass, flowers, bushes and holding down the sand. This has taken 20 years, I saw it, I know it and it is hard to believe what man is doing to our planet is changing it so fast.

I have sent most of the above to all 100 Federal Senators thanks to www.congress.org
Documents sets sent to Senator Kerry in 2000
Same sent to Senator McCain
I could support Senator McCain: have $100K worth of Sound/PA/Lights/Effects systems, which I will use for all my Trade Shows/Conventions/Seminars World-Wide

Eugene Denson says:
I'm over 65 and still working so my wife and I qualify for the free money. It seems entirely wrong for those of us who have more money to receive a gift from the government while those just like us who are unable to work do no. I urge AARP to push for including those on social security in the stimulus package.
01/29/08 6:34 PM
Mary Brown says:
I support the Senate's version of the Stimulus package as it will better serve all of us vs. a few.
01/29/08 6:36 PM
Ronald E. Toothaker says:
Yes We SS seniors have paid our share of taxes for a longer term then the people that are now paying taxes. We never should have been left out of the 2001 payments.
01/29/08 6:36 PM
Lois Rogers says:
I've been wondering why I'm not hearing about a rebate for, not just seniors, but people on SSDI. These people are consumers too, and struggling. They still need food, clothing, money for housing, etc. Because they are no longer able to work, are they being penalized? Aren't they deserving of something too?
01/29/08 6:37 PM
Mrs. Barbara Brown says:
I do hope that they take into consideration that the people on Social Security probably NEED this rebate the most and that they have worked a lifetime paying into the Sociaal Security system. Perhaps if they were having to get by with only Social Security they might have a better understanding of the issue.
01/29/08 6:37 PM
James G. Winton says:
Include low income Social Security recipients in tax rebates for maximum amount. Pass legislation allowing well to do recipients to pass on rebates to underpriviliged without increasing earned income for the one who passes.
01/29/08 6:37 PM
ARTHUR J HILL says:
1-29-08
IT IS SIMPLE---TREAT ALL ALIKE WITH THE STIMULAS PACKAGE, THAT INCLUDES BILL GATES AND WARREN BUFFETT AND ME--AGE 76 ANF HURTING JUSE LIKE OTHERS.
01/29/08 6:37 PM
Theodore Schoblocher says:
There is no Stimulus in this Package. It's a complete failure at a political attempt to sympathise with bad law makers in Washington. How about a package like they voted for themselves, a signifigant pay raise and free medical?
01/29/08 6:38 PM
Kat Knudsen says:
I think the older citizens should get the same amount of rebate from the government. It shouldn't matter that they are on fixed incomes they need it the most. Besides with more and more illegals getting SS without having put anything into social security before too long there will be no Social Security then what will the government to. Maybe we should put the Senate, House of Reps and the President back on Social Security and get rid of their retirement packages where they make what they get now for the rest of their lives and their wives even after they are gone continue to get their husbands salary until they die. Come on what is wrong with this picture????
01/29/08 6:38 PM
Jim Grimes says:
Congress has ignored the plight of 20 million older Americans, who worked and paid taxes all their lives, now existing only on Social Security. Barely able to buy even stables.
The price of milk has risen $1 a gallon in the last six months. Cereal on average fifty cents a box. Bread up 25%. Gasoline, Eighty cents a gallon. Eggs up 30%. Coffee, as much as $3 a can.
I don't think these 20 million Americans will soon forget those who deserted them as they struggle to survive.
Jim Grimes
01/29/08 6:38 PM
Miriam Eisbart says:
I had wondered if there was going to be any assistance for those of us 65 and older. I am a nurse and worked over 40 years. I became disabled in 2002 and am now living on S.S. and a small pension. It is nowhere enough to cover all of my bills and everyday is a struggle. I feel that people over 65 and are struggling and have paid taxes for many years should also be included in this plan to boost the economy.
01/29/08 6:38 PM
Jeanne K says:
I really hope we get some relief. Things are tight.
01/29/08 6:39 PM
Harold Williamson says:
The legislation should make it clear that IRA distributions are to be treated as earned income; they are after all deferred earned income. They are all taxed as ordinary income. If it is a tax rebate, then it should be based on taxes paid, otherwise it should be based on need and directed to those on welfare and unemployment compensation.
01/29/08 6:39 PM
Grace Erving says:
We are one of the many couples that rely only on S.S. to get through each month. By the time we pay all our household bills & renew our meds each month there is very little left for food. We fall between the cracks when it comes to getting help paying for our health insurance premium or getting food stamps. All federal agencies include the money that comes out of our checks for health insurance & that puts us & many others over the amount allowed to get help. If we got that extra rebate check we would definitly put it back into food & maybe a badly needed pair of shoes. Things we can't squeeze out of our S.S. income. They need to also update the amounts allowed to get food stamps & other necessary help so we don't have to strug-gle so much & go without so much of ordinary daily needs..
01/29/08 6:39 PM
Raymond Hartmann says:
Another bandaide approach to stimulate the economy! Many things of this nature have failed time and time again. The politicians are really only interested in how much lay they can get out of these proposals. Why eliminate/exclude social insecurity beneficaries? Why give more to the better-off than the poor. It should be reversed or at least one size fits all payment. The same is true for social security increases. The average increase is $80 but I get $9; but, when they increase charges I pay the same as the wealthy. They should graduate that increase in the fees for medicare or the drug plan, the same as the do for the benegit increase. I would be in favor of the same rate across the board for all occurances. There is no reason, logic, not common sense to anything the congress or the government bureaucrates do. It is insanity the way they come up with so-called solutions. The real solution to many of these and other economic problems is the 'FAIR TAX BILL', HR 25. We now have 72 congressmen supporting the bill (up from only 18 two years ago). The problem is that the opposition is a powerful lobby and gets lies and distortions into the media and the people remain ignorant of the facts and don't even know how to find out! Please go the www.fairtax.org and get some education.
01/29/08 6:39 PM
Pat Holler says:
We need the tax break for us seniors living on SS and our little bit we get from our investments. We need to buy the same things younger people do, such as food, gas, electric, home owners insurance and car insurance. Don't leave us out in the cold after all our years of paying our share of the taxes to help run this country.
01/29/08 6:40 PM
A.T.Hupp says:
I have written to our Sentor Byrd(age 90) and asked that he include social security in the stimulus.
01/29/08 6:40 PM
bruce morningstar says:
I cannot believe anyone in this country other than the very rich and Bush's Texas friends believe anything he says. He has no care for the poor, the elderly, and the middle class. As a life long Republican until the primary for 2000 where he and Rove showed that they have no integrity and honesty, I cannot believe he is still President and continues to pursue policies that affect his friends positively. To get the money into the economy, you give it to the poor and elderly who will spend it. While I am 62, we have an income and anything he provides will pay off bills only. What is that stimulus, and what does that do to the budget deficit that he keeps growing to the detriment of all under 50? We need new leadership and get Bush and Cheney and their destruction of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights out of this country. They are the illegal immigrants in the US, not anyone else.
01/29/08 6:41 PM
Rosemary J. Harrison says:
I am a senior citizen on a fixed income, however part of it is from a retirement pension, on which I pay income tax. My question is would the fact that I pay income tax on my pension, would that allow me to receive a tax rebate, even though I'm not employed at this time.
01/29/08 6:41 PM
Shirley J. Jones says:
I sure would be happy if I got a rebate check. I could really use it.
01/29/08 6:41 PM
robert barnes says:
AARP can't see the forest for the trees! It would be best for the country (and therefore for seniors) to pass the bill immediately without wasting time fighting for add-ons. If the economy really goes south many, many seniors will take income hits much larger than a few hundred dollars.
01/29/08 6:42 PM
sandy hagen says:
As one of the largest lobbying groups you should be able to buttonhole their socks off in favor of senior citizens. So many of us depend completely on AARP to represent us to our lawmakers.
01/29/08 6:42 PM
John Scarpa says:
Young ones FEAR us not!! we will die off and you will replace us!! What you do for us you are inadvertently doing for yourself.
01/29/08 6:43 PM
Carrie Larson says:
I have been asking my friends, neighbors and relatives across this land if they qualify for this "rebate" that is infront of congress now. What I am hearing is quick depressing because so many think they are getting this when they didn't read the articles for themselves about the "qualifications" to receive this rebate. Many are on Social Security only, therefore do not qualify. Others know any rebate they will get confiscated by the Veterans Administration to re-emburse the V.A. for prescriptions that are paid for by the V.A. the same as any tax refund they may qualify for.
Others, like my husband and I, won't qualify because we have "zeroed out" on our taxes. With his retirement from his employer and his Social Security, we make less than half the money ceiling for a "SINGLE" person let alone the $150,000 for a married couple. Yet our dear friends make very close to the $150,000 mark and would qualify for the whole $1200. NOTHING is fair about this whole package. I'm a psychologist. Mark my words, depression will lead to dire consequences with MANY people when they find out they have been left out again with this "formula" for these things....just like we were with the $300-600 deal in 2001. My husband and I got a check for $11.20! NOTHING had ever been said about a scale or percentage then any more than it is being said now. THIS has led even more of us to not trust anyone in government.
Carrie Pendleton, Oregon
01/29/08 6:43 PM
Elmer R Olson says:
There are lots of folks living on Social Security. They need it worst and the House plan leaves them out. Hooray for the Senate.
01/29/08 6:43 PM
Harold Thompson says:
I would rather they leave me out of the rebate.. This check will have to be repaid when you file your taxes for the year 2008 and I don't have a large enought refund to repay it
01/29/08 6:44 PM
Neil Clark says:
Re: House economic stimulus legislation.
AARP is supporting changes/addition to the House legislation. I post a paragraph from a Reuters news service article:
Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus, a Montana Democrat, has offered an alternative that would provide a flat $500 rebate to all eligible people, $1,000 for couples and $300 per child. Seniors with Social Security and other income of at least $3,000 would also be eligible for the rebates.
I call your attention to the LAST sentence of this article: "with Social Security AND OTHER INCOME OF AT LEAST $3000.
I, and I'm confident that there are millions of Social Security on S.S., do NOT have "other income of at least $3,000". We live.. or attempt to live.. on our S.S. ONLY! The COLA for those on S.S. was the smallest in recent years. Our expenses have increased just like those NOT on S.S. My S.S. check is $15 more for '08 than '07. But, my part B increased.. my medicare Blue Cross/Blue Shield premium increased.. my part D prescription BC/BS premium increased and my out-of-pocket prescription monthly cost increased. All said and done, I am financially worse off in '08 than '07!
I'm sick and tired of our elected representatives from the administration to the congress of putting their political agendas.. their personal "get re-elected" agendas before the welfare of the citizens of this country.. regardless of age! Frankly.. I'm sick and tired of all the B.S.!!! And as far as AARP is concerned.. I'd be happy if you'd save your money by NOT mailing me an invitation to join AARP every few months as I've been a paying member since 1989!
AARP is starting me to suspect it is like a lot of the nation's big corporations and the government.. the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing and is wasting its finances! I think you need to "clean house" of the people who allow this to happen. My God.. don't tell me you've got "bureaucrats" in AARP? Obvious to me YOU HAVE!
Neil F. Clark
01/29/08 6:44 PM
Pat Gruntman says:
Congress and the President should take a look at the cost of groceries, gas, and all other expenses. Seniors do not get a hidden discount on these items. They are feeling the cost of living inflation as much as the rest of those who will receive the rebate checks. Senior citizens should be included in the package.
01/29/08 6:44 PM
Susan says:
AARP is a little late on the issue of retired seniors who no longer pay taxes being able to get a rebate. I wrote to all of my congressmen/women the first day it made the news. There are approximately 20 million of us who paid taxes for many many years and could certainly use a little help now.
01/29/08 6:44 PM
Brenda Rathbone says:
I think older citizens should receive the rebate because being on a fixed income they need the money and will be buying and spending it putting it right back into the economy.
01/29/08 6:44 PM
Clive Lazarus says:
What is needed to help all Americans is to lower the interest rate on home loans to 2 percent. This is especially needed to help those people with incomes below $50,000.00 per annum and for veterans and single parents.
01/29/08 6:44 PM
Michael William Thilgen says:
It seems to me that if you pay into SSI all your life and now you are receiving retirement benefits that you would be excluded from the stimulus package. Who better deserves it?
01/29/08 6:44 PM
I Brennen says:
Report just came out that said Food was up 4.9% (or close to that) but our cost of living was only 2.6 (or close to that).Increase in Medicatre took most of that. Why cna't we have a cost of living that is reasonble based on FOOD. WE don't buy new cars and all that stuff so why is our SS bssed of that and not on waht we actually need.
01/29/08 6:44 PM
Mark Edwards says:
This "stimulus" program is just another welfare program. The government is going to have to borrow the money (from the Chinese and Arabs) to give it to people who didn't pay taxes. Those at the higher end will not get a check, but will be saddled with paying the
$150 billion in taxes PLUS INTEREST to finance this boondoggle. The "older Americans" are already getting a government check stripped from the payroll taxes of productively employed people. They are already getting subsidized medical services from the income tax confiscated from productively employed people. Where does the creeping socialism stop?
01/29/08 6:45 PM
Prefer to be anonymous says:
First, remember that minorities and elderly women graduated from high school or college before the passing of non-discrimination laws. Until the 1970's the newspapers and even college career placement offices had separate job listings for men and for women and women were forced to work in lower paying occupations. Even now, there is a salary differential in the workplace. Social Security follows salary history, so elderly women, and also elderly African Americans, male or female, are the most neglected if people on Social Security do not receive their share of the stimulus funding.
01/29/08 6:45 PM
James McCracken says:
I keep hearing reference to individuals with "earned income". What about individuals who are retired, but not yet collecting social security? Will we be able to participate in this rebate?
We could certainly use this rebate since we are living on our savings.
01/29/08 6:45 PM
Donald Jonak says:
Well I still do not understand why no one has brought up the fact that every member of congress each got a $4,400 raise the first of January, and I would like to know wno is paying for the raise? Donald Jonak
01/29/08 6:46 PM
James D Sistrunk says:
Well guess I just made it. I'll be 65 in Nov. They are sticking it to the good people that made this country. Now the people in Washington are tearing it apart. They act like children on a play ground. Nobody seems to care about what needs to be done like drill for our on oil. And stop making the middle east rich. I could go on and on.
01/29/08 6:46 PM
Harold I. Lunde says:
Thank you AARP for fighting for equity for us retired folks. I am 78 years old, and recently, my wife of almost 52 years died. I could really use the tax break.
01/29/08 6:47 PM
Diloris A. Petring says:
I am in agreement that we older seniors living on social security
deserve to receive a portion of the stimulus rebate. We worked for years and paid our taxes like everyone else, but we are the forgotten.. We lose our health care and everything else because we have gotten old. But we're still here a part of the human race.
01/29/08 6:47 PM
Harold I. Lunde says:
Thank you AARP for fighting for equity for us retired folks. I am 78 years old, and recently, my wife of almost 52 years died. I could really use the tax break.

Vic Cecere says:
The last time this happened, we went to war. Let's try and think before we jump into something that might not have a good plan for recovery.
01/29/08 6:48 PM
Arthur Schneider says:
I am 78 and my wife is 77. We getonly Social Security and a little bit of interest. Its getting tougher to make ends meet ends meet than ever before.
01/29/08 6:48 PM
Wayne O. Johnson says:
Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House has not responded to my request that the House reconsider their failure to allow retired folks to receive the economic stimulous check.
I am 65, retired and my income is the monthly check I get from SSA. I had retirement programs established, but cashed them in to fund my children's education.
I am an honorably discharged veteran of the US Air Force, I served during the 60's.
I guess we seniors are not considered important to our elected officials. Our campaign contributions must be too small.
Once again, our elected officials have let us down. What a shame.
01/29/08 6:49 PM
Joseph Gleason says:
While I'm not sixty five or older, I have many similar concerns. I am 5 years old and out of work. After spending over seventeen years with one company, I was let go due to plant closing. I don't have a problem with my previous employer, but I do have a problem with the attidude with potential employers. How many times do we have to here that "we are going in a different direction." I know it means younger prospects.
01/29/08 6:50 PM
t l gers says:
what about people under 65 who live solely on social security (disability)
01/29/08 6:50 PM
Pat Pettitt says:
I had already thought about those who are struggling with only SS benefits, when I heard about the rebate. Especially since families with $150,000 will be getting sizable returns, the whole premise is disgusting. GIVE THE REBATE to those who are struggling.
01/29/08 6:51 PM
James D Sistrunk says:
The best package would be to make the tax cut perament. That would do more than anything else. Remember what the Ragan tax cut did for American.
01/29/08 6:51 PM
Sandy Beebe says:
after reading your email, i have to fume!
I am just 50 yrs old, been in my medical profession for 18 yrs.
what about the many millions of ameracans in the USA whom get injured on their job, get harrased hurtfully by thier bosses, and then in a few months get fired wronfully, due to the injury.??
I had surgery after running my lab alone for 2 yrs because one of the 2 machines broke down, they didnt want to pay to fix it, so i was
told i had to run the lab alone, 2 yrs later and serious elbow and bilateral thumb injures and then get harrased by the boss!
In the midst of this my mother died, my younger sister was found dead due to a neglect at a medical clinic cause they didnt xray her chest to find the pheumonia, she died at 48 yrs old.
I lost my house to foreclosure, got high blood pressure and depression..
I sued the hospital, won the workers comp lawsuit
i only worked 3 wks out of the year........
so most likely I will be one of those Statistics that also
DON'T get the stimulous package of that 800.00
now thats really what i call immoral and wrong by our
US president..
thats totally out of line..
thank you

CONNIE CLARK says:
I AM LIVING ON SOCIAL SECURITY I AM 64 IN MAY. I DON'T HAVE HEALTH INSURENCE, FOR ANOTHER YEAR AND 4 MONTHS, MY HOUSE IS IN DISREPAIR, DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT EXTRA MONEY WOULD DO TO HALP SOMEONE LIKE ME IT JUST TOOK NE OVER A YEAR TO PAY MY LAST DOCTOR BILL OF $275.00
NOW IF I GO BACK BECAUSE I HAVENT BEEN FEELING WELL,HOW MUCH WILL IT COUST, AND MAYBE I COULD BUY MY MEDS. MORE THEN ONCE EVERY THREE MONTHS.
01/29/08 6:52 PM
Susan E Babilot says:
I agree wholeheartedly that many over sixty-five have the problem, but don't forget that this is not just those affected. I am 62, however I have been fully permanently disabled since I was 57. I was a workaholic who never wanted to retire. After lung cance with radiation & chemo therapy, ending with a lung removal, I was finally faced with the reality that I was unable to work. I had insurance but still had co-pays to pay. What I had paid into my my retirement was eaten up by those bills. I have a small disability income & Social Security. I have wonderful children who have helped all they can & more than I can ask. I am glad they will receive money, but God forgive that they have to spend it on me.
01/29/08 6:52 PM
Lana Beyerle says:
It appears that older Americans are being left out here. They can always use any kind of boost to their income. This might help them decide whether to take a vacation in America and spend it in the USA or put a down payment on a new car. Lowering the interest rate will lower their investments they are living on. A tax break for the wealthy only gives them more money for international travel such as Europe so they can spend it there.
If the loan companies would try to deal with the people losing their homes instead of forclosing on them maybe so many people would not be losing their homes.
America needs to get out of Iraq before we go bankrupt.
01/29/08 6:52 PM
Mrs M Bonner says:
I have written the Federal Reserve, my congressmen and many news outlets concerning the reduction of interest rates ( they definitely lower my income) and the omission of seniors benefiting from any stimulus plan. I have been outraged for many years at the treatment we seniors get when we are a very important part of the economy. I believe the government and its agencies are bullied by Wall Street and banks that were irresponsible in their lending practices and expect the general public to bail them out.
01/29/08 6:52 PM
Allan Schuster says:
AARP's position on the economic stimulus package is correct. However, extending the rebates only makes for a bigger band-aid and not a cure for the illness causing the long-term problem.
Start with rolling back Federal and State Taxes on fuel.
Place a cap on gas, heating oil, and fuel prices. The commodity prices will then come down as well, and people will once again be able to pay their mortgages, which too has sky rocketed. The Fed's lower rates, and the Fed's loan guarantees should help resolve that as well for the banks and for the home owner. These are long-term solutions for a contracting economy, and for people who fear a recession may take place.
If the cure seems to drastic, then maybe the government should release th oil reserves for six months or perhaps a real recession will take place in 2009.
01/29/08 6:52 PM
Leroy Sternhagen says:
What else is new, they feel like the seniors are no longer contributing so why bother. They forget that we have been in the work forse for many years my self started to work (for pay) at the age of twelve setting pins in a bowling alley. I had to get my social security card then. They no longer care about the average Joe and Jane, in this great country where the "Majority rules" is now the "Minorty dictates".
01/29/08 6:52 PM
NDS says:
It is unfair to leave out senior Americans in the stimulus package. Some of them do not make enough money to cover their everyday expenses, and it is UNFAIR to leave them out of this package. If Congress had to live solely on social security benefits they would understand that these Americans need and deserve this tax rebate.
01/29/08 6:52 PM
Daniel Taylor says:
The Bush economic stimulus plan is nothing more than a move to try to win votes for the republican party. Does Bush think that we are that stupid to swallow the bone he is throwing us? Does he think that we are going to forget Iraq and the thousands of lives that were lost for the sole purpose of making Haliburton stock holders richer? I say HELL NO to Bush and the right wing. Vote Democratic this November.
01/29/08 6:53 PM
Dolores Mackenzie says:
What about people under age 65,That's are on widows disability,We pay taxes too,on every bill we have.
Thank You,

Eileen Fullenwider says:
A check should be paid to only those who pay taxes. We receive SS but still work !
01/29/08 6:53 PM
Dj Merritt says:
What I would like to know is if anyone has thought of the disabled when rethinking this package. We too are on a fixed income which raises at a very slow rate, much slower than the increased cost of living. Upon any increase we get, our rent goes up, the benefits from foodstamps and medicaid goes down. Where is the logic or the fairness in that. We like the ones on SS have a hard time paying our bills on a monthy basis, with the contstant raise in the cost of living we have fallen through the cracks. We are not disabled by choice , we paid our dues by working and paying into the system and now it seems that we are being punished by that same system. Most disabled americans are trying to survive on less than 700.00 a month when rents for decent places to live run in the 500.00 per month range. I wish that someone would also address these issues.
01/29/08 6:54 PM
B.E.Meadows says:
What else is new with the plan of bush and his gang of thugs,in any way of wasteing money ,and spending more then all presidents before him,yet it hasnt helped many Americans only Halliburton,K.B.R.and people at Blackwater.
Bush has been a BIG BUSINESS PRESIDENT AND SCREW THE LITTLE ,POOR,WORKING AND THE OLD AMERICANS OF THE USA WHILE GIVING BENEFITS TO PEOPLE FROM OTHER COUNTRIES..
Thank God we only have about 360 more days of him...
01/29/08 6:54 PM

please see that SS recipients are included.
01/29/08 6:54 PM
Janet says:
I'm all for any taxes that come back to us of what we've had to pay out. Will this "windfall" go to improve the economy. Will we all go out and buy stuff? As for myself, this will not even come close to helping me keep my house when the property taxes come due. Living on disability S.S. while I own my home (mortgage free) has placed me in the unfortunate position of coming close to losing my home because of rising property taxes. So I'm sure not going to go out and buy something as those who have no clue as to how we live are expecting. When people without big bucks are able to hold office is when we will have some REAL relief.

What about persons whose only income is VA disability, and persons who have NO income at all (e.g., with Social Security Disability cases pending ), or with state disability income (which is temporary) that is too small for any tax liability, or unemployed persons? To leave no one behind, what about a tax rebate for these persons?

Even tho these checks will be welcome they are to small to do anything with. The oil co's will hike gas prices to get there share.

JUST WHEN I THINK THE PRESENT ADMINISTRATION IS DOING SOMETHING GOOD FOR A CHANGE, AND OH HOW NICE, IT'S BIPARTISAN. BUT DON'T TURN YOUR BACK TOO QUICKLY, THEY DID STILL MISS PART OF THE BOAT! AND THANK AARP FOR REMAINING ON GUARD.
I AM A FULL TIME EMPLOYEE OVER 65. I SHOULD HAVE RETIRED BY NOW BUT CAN'T DUE TO THE ECONOMY. I DO PLAN TO DO SO IN ABOUT A YEAR.
I CAN SO RELATE TO THESE SENIORS LEFT BEHIND. "NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND" DO YOU THINK BUSH GOT HIS NOUNS MIXED UP? LETS CHANGE CHILD TO SENIOR AND MAIL IT TO HIM POST HASTE!!
(Oh, and of course the rest of that "tribe" on the hill)

Fred Talcott says:
Why give a tax rebate to someone who is not paying taxes, the more folks that receive the stimulus the less the amount of the stimlulus will be. The lower the stimlus amount is; the impact as a stimlus becomes smaller.

Frances K. Perrin says:
The stimulous package for older Americans and the ones on unemployment and also over 50 is a good one. But I would like to mention those of us depending on SSDI and over 50. Where do we stand. Food stamp increase would help but we spend as well. Are we to be left out?

brian haskell says:
I think it would be extremely unfair for someone like me and my wife, who paid taxes for nearly 40 years, not to receive a stimulus check when a kid with a paper route last year, would.

Mike says:
I am very disappointed that once again I am left out by the government because they think I make too much money. I don't even feel there is any representation for me in the government anymore. I have 2 kids in college and could really use the stimulus money. They have taken all my deductions and hit me with AMT to spend our money on 10,000 earmarks.
I sincerely doubt any one in government has figured out the total impact of all their taxes. This socialism is what we fought against and now we are becoming the enemy.
My coworkers don't speak so much of the elections as they do of a revolution that needs to take place. No not the kind with guns. The kind with words and ideas like letting people keep most of the money they earn and solving economic problems by spending cuts instead of increases. For me this economic package is a tax increase ( I know someone has to pay for it) and as a result I am cutting my spending not increasing it.

Barbara Johnson says:
As a teacher, when I was about 45...I remember feeling that it was patently wrong for the 'poor little young teachers and their poor little young husbands'...to be given the only money available when it came time for raises. I am now 72...having 'burned out' because I taught too long in a difficult time in our History...and once again...the rebate for those of us like me...who don't have enough to live on as it is...are pushed out of the process. How disgusting!
The example this Administration has set for consideration of the needs of the American people who aren't oil barons is quite remarkable. I am not one of the wealthy Social Security recipients...I used to be in the Middle Class...Not any more...

Duane Mortensen says:
I am in favor of the rebates but also believe strongly that we need to push hard to get people to only spend the money for items that are made in the USA. If we are ever going to get our economy going again we have to get people to buy American first.

somebody needs to pull their head out..............I don't see how anybody can rely on the government for any assistance. Accept for sec 8....as long as democrats have control{which will be after 2008} you can forget it!

JParris says:
It appears not only is the House forgetting older Americans but those who are both
older and have been on long term disability. Yes, many do depend on Social Security
for their living expenses......yet those on Disability rely on far less......we really need to
address both issues ......as the current suggestions will not stimulate the economy.
50 million Americans have a permanent disability.
Think about those on both Medicare and Medicaid, sure their medical is covered, yet what they receive each month per US Government and State laws provides for
minimal existence........many are homeless, living in shelters, old autos, closed up
buildings, friends homes, relatives homes,
(where the Medicaid laws govern how they live and how much they can own) many are living
in nursing homes ...where they might not need to be, just to have shelter and food.
Many topics need to be addressed and not just for the working class with children....

Merritt Lane III says:
If those who do not pay taxes are entitled to a hand out of our taxes, then those who work and pay taxes are more entitled to a hand out of the taxes that they paid. This rebate is nothing but a hand out. How about paying perople for working even those who are retired.

Why worry about the over 65 crowd, we already rounded 3rd base. I sold my co. when slick willy was pres. I held a note for $500, to make the deal fly, I didnt like it, I had no choice. Only to find out I had to pay taxes on the note as if I recieved cash, real nice of the stain maker. Bush recinded it a yr. later, but way to late for me, would have had to redo all tax returns, it would have been a nite mare, besides opening up all kinds of things, relavent or not to the IRS. To follow up my sentiments, I wouldnt vote for a Democrat for dog catcher in my town. I watched the Presidents final speach, and I really started to get sick to my stomach, hard to believe, cause I am a Marine, but to see those dirt bags sitting there,(Democrats) not clapping, or standing, even when the pres was right on what he said. It is sick, we must throw the s bags out of office, ASAP.

Congress seems to forget that taxes are our money. It does not belong to them. They are not giving us a gift. The more we can get back the better. I liked George Bush comment last night that IRS take checks and money orders for those who want to pay more.

Ron Soratos says:
I am a 52 year old man disabled for almost 10 years now. I rely solely on Social Security to get by on. I don't have any taxable income so I don't qualify for a rebate. I have been impacted by the economic downturn as much, if not more, than everyone else. Is there any talk of including disabled people like me on a fixed income in this rebate plan? I think everyone should be included!

Marc Anderson says:
The whole stimulus package should be geared to seniors on social security, the poor, and the unemployed. That money would be immediatly put back in the economy. Families making 100,000 plus a year dont need a thousand bucks, they need to learn how to add and subtract. The idea of rebates is foolish in this time of huge government spending. Yeah, I'll take the money and our household makes considerably less than 100 grand but it would make more sense to give it where it is really needed.

Hazel Tarr says:
If they want this money in the hands of people who will spend it, they best include us seniors. Many of us would love to be able to buy something to eat besides oatmeal and hamburger, buy a new outfit, maybe see a movie, believe me we would waste no time spending it!!

Gloria Ackerman says:
My husband and I commend AARP, towards working for the Senior Citizens on Social Security, which by the way also, includes those of us that are on Social Security Disablility under the age of 65, and not able to work, living on a very limited income. We too, are in desperate need for help with funding to help us stimulate the economy. Our income is so minute, and the choices we must make monthly is the difference between placing food on our table, or paying our utilite bills, the necessary comforts of life. Our funds are so small and our budget is extremely tight, we are not able to spend foolishly, much less go out and enjoy an evening of entertainment, nor dine out. I know for a fact, our household would definitely stimulate the economy, if we are to receive extra funds with the help of the Senate's super size plan.

I understand working Americans are going to get some money from the government. I feel Senior citizens who are on Social Security should get some of the refund too. We too were working Americans before we retired.
