shAARP Talk: Observations from AARP

(Category: Health Care)

Bill Novelli, AARP's CEO, sounds off on today's Medicare vote:

“Eight in ten older Americans are concerned about their health care bills; even more are worried about what those bills will be in the coming years. It’s unfortunate that some senators voted to block debate on real, positive changes to our health care system.”

Peggy Smith says:

I wish someone would address the unequal amounts of social security between men and women. I myself receive $598.00 monthly from social security and $59.00 monthly from SSI. However the single men I know receive $929.00 monthly SSI, food stamps and Medicade. Before I started receiving my Medicare, I receive Medicade but I had to pay a spenddown of $22.00 per month. On the other hand my single male friends don't have to pay a spenddown. I am also single and have rent and ulities to pay, gas for my car, insurance. Before they started paying my medicare premiums I received $152.00 in food stamps, they have decreased my amount down to 122.00 per month, while my male friend receives 48.00, pays no medicare or spenddown, shares house with his mother. The system doesn't see male and female as equals when it comes to money. We all have to pay rent, lights, gas, car insurance and gas for our vechiles, and don't forget if something breaks on your car.
I really wish someone would take up this cause.

Sincerely

Peggy Smith
