I'm Back and Ready To Chat!
Hello everyone! I've not been posting here on Shaarp Session for awhile, but I'm back and will be posting more regularly - and robustly- than ever before.
You may or may not know that my position is a volunteer position here at AARP. Some of my favorite parts of this role include meeting so many people, both individuals and organizations, who really care about situation of our country today and think AARP can be a big resource to help contribute to our well being now and in the future. As a volunteer and member, I really feel I get to help improve the lives of older Americans and their families across the nation along with the nearly million other AARP volunteers - and our nearly 4 million activists!
I've been busy traveling across the country with AARP, talking to our volunteers, meeting with elected officials...and even an occasional celebrity here and there. This has been an incredible experience already and will start sharing some of my experiences with you. I'll be bringing you pictures from the road, some interviews and sharing my background and experience. Hopefully this can be a venue where you get a more personal view of AARP, post your input and a have some fun doing it. Talk to you soon!

This is the first time I have tried this, so I may not be doing it correctly. I have some legal questions and need advice on ex-husband and kids.

AARP seems to be a highly effective advocate for members in regard to political and governmental issues and concerns and an utter failure in the area of member benefits. My best price for a ticket through Delta airlines from Memphis to Detroit is $144.50. The same destination on the same date on the same airline through AARP's travel Center was $293.00. Both prices included taxes and fees. This is a serious AARP problem.I can take advantage of my AARP member benefits for only twice the price. The organization can definitely improve in almost every area of member benefits. Hartford Insurance prices are ridiculously high according to the quotes I received. For a substantial increase in cost, I could choose to take advantage of my AARP member benefits.
Any organization with a 33 million membership has the clout to do better than this.

The Hartford Auto insurance should have been a little more straightforward in issuing policies. In Colorado, 2007 saw the end of liability offsets by auto insurance companies. Begining January 1, 2008 the law changed to prevent auto insurance companies offsetting liability coverage by another insurance company. Any policies written after 1-01-08 had to comply. The insurance companies knew this was becomming effective for most of 2007. Lucky me, we renewed our auto policy in September 2007. In late May 2008 I had the experience of having another motorist collide with me head-on. The other party crossed into my lane and I couldn't get out of the way. The other motorist had liability coverage and we had un(under)insured liabiity coverage. Not quite a year later, I still face a hip replacement, the expenses well over $200,000 to date, and I receive a message that Hartford is not going to pay any of the liability coverage because their obligation was offset by the other motorist's coverage.
It would have been nice to know of this change before it took place. I feel being strapped with thousands of dollars in medical bills, through no fault of mine, was the result of too much greed on the part of Hartford.
AARP should use its membership clout to get better representation from vendors plying for the business.

Thank you, fellow bloggers, for your very helpful comments
regarding Hartford insurance. The lack of decent AARP member services has troubled me too, and frankly I'm very
surprised that the organization continues to be so
unresponsive to the comments of its members. Why would
they choose to affiliate themselves with vendors such
as Hartford, for example? One really hopes for a
major change, and soon. I don't see the value in
continuing membership since there are no direct
benefits that I see.

My husband and I have been married 3 yrs. we are both 63. I own my home and he has his house mortgaged and is renting it to his daughter. He is trying to refinance it and therefore he still is financially responsible for it. Question - if something should happen to him am I resonsible for any of his financial commitments i.e. this house and loans. I have not signed anything.

Healthcare Reform:
Both you and I know the following;
That this enormous healthcare bill (2000+ pages, congress version) will destroy the American economy!
That the public option will put an un-fare competition on private healthcare insurers putting them out of business thereby forcing everyone into the public option!
That the tax increases on small businesses, insurers, healthcare providers, hospitals, medical devices, etc will force companies, doctors and hospitals out of business and force millions of Americans into poverty!
That these are the results that Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and Barrack Obama would like to see to force every American under government control!
The American people, Democrats, Republicans, Moderates and Conservatives have shouted to you from the roof tops that we DO NOT WANT GOVERNMENT RUN INSURANCE! But none of you are listening!
We do not want anymore government takeover of our economy! We will not take it any longer! Tomorrow we will march on Washington to look our representatives in the eyes and tell them enough is enough!
No one will be re-elected that supports or votes for the Government Takeover Healthcare bills! We will clean the house and senate of anyone who no longer defends our constitution or Declaration of Independence!
When we elected you to office, you took an oath and swore to support and defend the Constitution against enemies foreign and domestic! Well, if you have any integrity and you stand by your oath, the enemy is this administration with Obama at the helm and his Czars trying to destroy the very fabric of what this great country was built upon, PERSONAL FREEDOM from government control!
Now is the time for you to defend the rights of the American people you were elected to serve. Join together with other Democrats, Republicans, Moderates and Conservatives and stop these outrageous Bills and put this Administration on NOTICE!
Where in our Constitution does it give our Government the right to take over private businesses or Banks or to force this healthcare program down the throats of Americans?

We THE AMERICAN PEOPLE are angry with AARP!
The AARP organization is again endorsing the Congress and OBAMA's healthcare plans. On your website, and in your "town hall" debates you try to redefine or clarify the policy issues which Americans are opposed to. But they are clearly written into the new 2400 page Congressional bill. So AARP is NOT looking out for American seniors! Instead, your looking out for your own interests to sell suplimentary policies when the Government plan goes ary! As usual, it's all about the money!
Well let me clue you in, Americans are not going to stand by and put money in your pockets! We no longer can trust AARP so we will cancel our memberships with AARP and join other companies that are out there and do look out for seniors interests! I'm presently telling all of my family, relatives, friends and business associates that are with AARP to cancel their memberships and I will suggest alternatives that they can join and even save money!
You did this to yourselves and I hope it puts AARP out of business!
Socialized medicine has not worked in Massachusetts or Hawaii, Canada, the UK or in any other country without a significant reduction in the quality and availability of doctors, hospitals, pharmaceuticals and services, and has resulted in the increased of disease and death.
The majority of the American people are happy with our present healthcare in America and don't want the US Government meddling with our doctors, hospitals and private insurance providers!
This is a country founded on capitalism and small Government and it has worked fine since or founding fathers put the constitution together.

Now that I see AARP is suporting this health care bill, just want you to know you are not looking out for my interests. If AARP continues to support this bill that will cost over a trillion dollars and include a public option, then I will be canceling my membership. I will not send my money to any group that will back a bill that will raise taxes, lose jobs and put this country in further debt.

Tonnie Fortner says:
This is to say any company that would support this Health Care Bill is nothing less than a absolute fraud. The health care bill that congress is proposing will do nothing but hurt the Senior Citizens with their health care.
