News To Know: Hunger Rate Amongst Children Grows (Category: General AARP)
According to the Agriculture Department's annual study on food security, hunger rates for American children have reached there highest point since 1998. In fact, the number of children who have experienced major disruptions in their food supply increased 50% in the last year alone. In all, over 36 million Americans went hungry at some point in the last year. I know the economy is in bad shape right now, but there's no excuse for people in this country to be unable to get enough food. Just one more problem to throw on the to-do list for President-Elect Obama.

IF you believe these numbers, please believe I'm still a virgin after 30 years of marriage. This is 10+% of the total US population. This is total BS!

What country is this survey from? Is this the same country that we keep hearing about an obesity epidemic, especially among children? Where McDonald's is castigated night after night? Where the food police are talking about taking control over what parents feed their children?
I think this story is complete trash.
There may be some isolated pockets of true hunger and poverty. But mass hunger? Get real.

Kathy Miller says:
That is not BS sir. The schools in my community are taking donations for food. Because some children do not have anything to eat over the weekend. Also there are 20 families living in the Wal-Mart parking lot in RH because of foreclosure. We need to help anybody we can. This is a time for Americans to come together.
Let's get rid of the ME mentality. Help a neighbor.

What percentage of the children are children of parents who only care about their next "fix"? We have the right "to the pursuit of happiness", not the priveledge.
Maybe if we sterilized drug addicts, the population of hungry and neglected children would go down drastically.

What a BS story!
Another person that thinks Obama will/can change things.
Just take a look at all of the Public School food programs in the "Lower Income Areas" and see all of the FREE food that is thrown away daily because the disadvantaged children won't bother to eat a well rounded diet.
Just ask any school cafeteria worker if you don't believe it.

Yes, education in nutrition is a big need, no doubt. We're on the front lines of hunger in Texas and it's a much larger issue that many folks realize. Please understand the 10% number quoted is "hunger" issues at some point, this is not saying everyday 36 million people go without food.
