ShAARP Session: Observations from AARP

There is a certain perception common amongst Americans. For some reason older drivers are labeled negatively and viewed as less safe than drivers of other age groups. While there are some physical changes that can make driving a bit more difficult, the facts simply don't show that older drivers pose a greater danger than others.

Case in point, the AAA has gathered statistics showing that older drivers:

Kill fewer motorists and pedestrians than any other age group;
Have the lowest crash rate per driver;
Have the lowest rate of crashes involving alcohol;
Use seatbelts the most.

Just goes to show you that when it comes to older drivers, you can't rely on perceptions.

I for one would rather have an elderly driving around in my neighborhood rather than most of the hollier than thow suv drivers who think they own the road. I in all my years have never seen such rude people, you add the young driver to that, who doesn't know enough to know what they don't know. Sorry, about the riddle. So surround me with the elderly, who are careful around the child in the road, and care about the animal that just ran out of the yard.

In our state of IL...I feel that we are treated unfairly simply because of our age. We have to go for driving tests much more often than others. As long as our driving record is good and we have had no accidents or tickets.....I see no reason why we should be treated any different than other drivers. I know of other states that simply mail their new Drivers License to them when it's time to renew. I feel that older drivers are some of the best drivers, and should not be picked on.
