ShAARP Session: Observations from AARP

Given President Obama's speech to the American Medical Association earlier this week, I wanted to quickly plug AARP's efforts at bringing about comprehensive health care reform. The good folks at AARP's Health Action Now! site have created an interactive map in which users can scroll over testimonials from everyday people about their problems with the health care system.

Here is one typical note, from Roberta H. of Hickory, North Carolina:

"When one of my 8 prescriptions costs $817 for a 28-day supply I hit the "gap" where I have to pay the full price by mid-April!!! And, when a 40-hour stay in the hospital allows them to charge Medicare more than $2,000 just for pharmaceutical costs, the whole system needs drastic change. Last year my pharmacy deductions were more than 1/4 of my Social Security total."

Check out ways you can take action and help influence the debate.

Aaron and Fredda Glatt says:

Everything we have read or seen about Obama's Health Plan would be paid for, in large part, by senior citizens.

How can you, in good conscience, support this plan. Apparently, you, like our President has failed to read this plan.

Whose said are you on, anyway.

Signed two disgruntled AARP members.

I disagree with what AARP is doing with about this health plan. AARP should be helping the peoples NOT sliding with the president.
the president wants to take money from the medicare and fund His plan and his idea is to the hell with older folks as they are going to die anyway .
I will find out just how AARP is with the health plann and one thing you can be sure is I WILL CANCEL MY MEMBERSHIP. AND SO WILL MY MANY FRIENDS DO THE SAME.

William Dommett says:

I to am becomming dissatisfied with what I am reading in the AARP letters. I am 79 and my wife is 77 We have been on medicare since we turned 65 and we were onmedicare supplement insurance as long as we could afford it. Since then[ the last four years we have been with several HMO plans. At first we were reluctant to join, since we were hearing negative things about HMOs. We have now found that each year we are able to research all the programs and enroll in the one that best fits our needs each year. The care has been very good, the preventive tacts of them have been exellent. Even their progam of getting us drugs at their price[not retail] if we should reach the donut hole. I think the congress should be taking lessons from these plans who are incompetion with each other for our buisness each year. The american way of competition usually produces the best in the long run

Martin Albanese says:

My bigest concern is where is the money coming from to pay for this. We can't afford any more debt. Soon China will own us. The congress and senate are not listening to us and that really scares me. I don't think aarp is listening either. Why don't we just help the uninsured citizens that want insurance and go after the insurance and drug companys that are riping us off.

lindahudson says:

can anyone tell me how this health reform plan helps people who can't afford to pay for insurance, by putting a fine on them? Also what happens to people who can't afford to buy their medications if the new health reform bill makes cuts to medicare benefits? I think there will be a chance for people with mental problems to cause more problems if they can't afford to take their medications. Does President Obama want that?

Mr. Kim Triesler says:

Ever notice how your comments have to be "reviewed" by a blog owner? Gee, and it's no wonder a lot more comments aren't posted on here, right? Say anything bad about AARP...like saying something about the Messiah, the Self-Annointed One -- he be called "Obama" to whom they're making children sing songs of praise to him in schools! Reminds me of Nazi Germany in the 1930s, and what's going on down in Venezuela with Chavez. But, look at who the AARP CEO is...and then look at BO. See the similarity? And you wonder why AARP (read that the CEO) supports the Health Care boon doggle?
