From The New York Times to PerezHilton, AARP is Making News Across the Nation
Hot on the AARP News radar this morning is a front page article in the New York Times that takes a look at the effect the bill taken up this week by the Senate Finance Committee would have on seniors receiving health benefits through Medicare.
The debate is heated, and AARP had a voice in the article: David Certner, legislative counsel is quoted, saying "It's unfair to single out seniors to pay more for their health benefits when other high-income people are not being asked to pay more."
On the other end of the news spectrum, AARP The Magazine is getting a lot of attention for its cover stories in recent issues. On Bruce Springsteen's 60th birthday, the New York Times' "Well" blog posted "The Boss Turns 60," and talked about how fans of the rock legend never thought they'd see the day Springsteen was on the cover of AARP's magazine. But, as Nancy Graham says, "...he really personifies our message at AARP that attitude matters more than age."
An atypical place AARP news is showing up? PerezHilton.com. The ubiquitous celebrity gossip blogger featured the magazine's November/December issue cover with Natalie Cole. The story includes excerpts from ATM's article and calls Cole "a true inspiration." Fun fact: 93% of PerezHilton.com readers are under the age of 45 - with 70% between 21-34. We're really extending our reach!

AARP has sold us down the river on Health Care reform. I find all your pious explanations as phony as those of Pelosi, Reid and your other Democratic/Socialist comrades. Shame on all of you.

James Dages says:
AARP has the management taken a vote of the members to see just how many really want the government health care bill? This is a very important issue and I don't think you have any right to make this type of decision. I for one am not happy with the health care bill and I was wondering if you have taken the time to read the bill before throwing the AARP support behind it. Are do you just believe what Big Brother is telling you? I don't think there is any way you could have had the time to read and understand the 1900 pages of this bill. Doesn't worry you just a little that it take that much paper for one bill?
Maybe it is time we start looking for a new management group that has a little more concern for the senior citizens.
Sincerely
James Dages

Betty Stedman says:
We are very disappointed in the the stand the executive board of AARP has taken regarding the House health care reform bill. At best it is a poor bill and doesn't address all the issues concerning this topic. As far as the "myths" that you feel are false, the senior citizens of this country are well informed and can understand fact from fiction. We find it hard to believe that your point of view represents all the members of AARP.

PLEASE DISCONTINUE ANY SOLICITING TO MY ADDRESS. I DO NOT BELIEVE IN THE DECISION OF YOUR ORGANIZATION AND WOULD APPRECIATE YOU RECONSIDER YOUR SUPPORT FOR THE HEALTH CARE PLAN. I PREFER STAYING AWAY FROM SOCIALIZED MEDICINE MORE GOVERNMENT CONTROL OF OUR LIVES.
THANKS BUT NO THANKS.
