Women Over 50 Are Emmys' Big Winners
By Lorrie Lynch, August 26, 2014 12:53 AM
If you didn't tune into the 66 th Primetime Emmys Monday night, you missed a whole lot of love of women of a certain age.
At 54, 53, 67 and 65, actresses in both comedy and drama took home awards for doing some of the best work of their careers - and they looked fantastic doing it.
Take Julia Louis-Dreyfus, for example. Dressed in a presidential shade of red, Louis-Dreyfus, 53, won a much deserved Emmy for her role as Veep Selina Meyer. And JLD is always the life of the party - especially if she wins. At the Golden Globes in January she had her onscreen bag handler Tony Hale come up on stage to do what he does on Veep, whisper important nothings in her ear. Monday night she and Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston, who played one of her Seinfeld love interests years ago, were ready to entertain with an extended staged smooch.

Then there was the statuesque Allison Janney, 54, a two-time winner this year. On Aug. 16 she took home an outstanding guest actress in a drama series Emmy for her sensitive turn as a sexually frustrated wife in Showtime's Masters of Sex. On Monday she won again, as best supporting actress in a comedy, reminding us that on CBS's Mom she plays "a mother, a grandmother and a great grandmother."
And what about Oscar-winner Jessica Lange? At 65, stunning in black, the actress who mesmerized us in King Kong, The Postman, Frances and Blue Sky- was honored for her work in Fox's American Horror Story: Coven. Her co-star Kathy Bates, 67, also an Oscar winning actress, took home the best supporting actress Emmy. As Julianna Margulies declared, "What a wonderful time for women on television."

And while men over 50, were well represented in the nominations, they didn't do quite as well at the awards. Bryan Cranston won a fourth Emmy for best actor in the night's big winner Breaking Bad, and Joe Morton, was honored on Aug. 16 with an award as outstanding guest actor in ABC's hit drama Scandal.
