AARP Community Challenge 2017: Wayne, Michigan

The AARP Community Challenge funds “quick-action” projects that build momentum for local change to improve livability for people of all ages.

PROJECT: Turning a barren alley into a gathering space

Derby’s Alley, a city-center pathway in downtown Wayne, Michigan, now boasts new benches and tables and a space for events. “We wanted to make our downtown walkable,” said Juan Bradford, president of the Wayne Main Street Association. “[We wanted to] make it a friendly inviting place for anybody who wants to come visit Wayne.” Now residents and visitors alike can use the public space and enjoy the increased walkability and community vibe of the area.
