How to Be a Sexy Grandma at the Beach

My daughter was horrified and my grandsons hysterical when Glam-ma Lo (me) showed up for a swim at the pool in a bikini:

"Mom! Are you kidding?"

"Glam! You look like Miley Cyrus!"

I thought Goldie Hawn, Vanessa Williams and Jessica Lange had sexed up grannyhood to the point where anything goes, but apparently France remains the only place on the planet where it's OK for grandmothers to bare a little boob or tush. If you, too, have felt the pressure of aging-body paranoia, here are a few ways to break it:

Show off your shoulders. Save the bikini and plunging halter tops for vacations without the kids. Instead, try channeling your inner goddess with an elegant one-shoulder, one-piece swimsuit like the one shown at left. (The scarcity of older swimsuit models will be the subject of an upcoming post.)

Three nice things about a one-piece:

1. It emphasizes shapely curves and sensual shoulders.

2. It covers your cleavage.

3. You never have to tug it up or check for spillage.

In addition to all that, a one-piece with shirring or compression panels across the abdomen can diminish the prominence of a mushy middle. Try, for example: Target Women's One-Shoulder 1-Piece Swimsuit (; Lands' End Women's Shape & Enhance One Shoulder One Piece Swimsuit (; or Miraclesuit Network Jena Wire-Free One-Shoulder Swimsuit (

Stick to high-cut legs. Yes, girlfriends, a high-cut leg line trims your thighs, adds inches to your legs and gives your swimsuit a long, lean base right down to your toes. Skip skirted suits and those straight-across retro legs that claim to "help" us: They're dowdy and leg-shortening, and their optics add pounds we don't need. Most of all, stop worrying about full rear coverage; this being 2014, a little cheekiness atop that high-cut leg looks adorable on you.

Blur aging skin with self-tanner. Don't let "old skin" scare you into a muumuu. A do-it-yourself tinted self-tanner can quickly blend in brown spots and broken capillaries. Try one of these: L'Oreal Paris Sublime Bronze Tinted Self-Tanning Golden Mousse (, Lancome Flash Bronzer Tinted Self-Tanning Body Gel ( or Clarins Intense Bronze Self-Tanning Tint for Face and Décolleté (

Choose provocative accessories. Slip on a pair of big dark sunglasses and a hat with a broad, peekaboo brim. Then swipe on a tinted lip protector in a face-brightening color such as red, coral, berry or rose. Finally, top it all off with your sunniest extra - an appealing smile! Try, for instance, Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment SPF 15 in Sugar Cherry ( or Neutrogena Revitalizing Lip Balm SPF 20 in Healthy Blush (
