President Richard Nixon nominates Anna Mae Hays (left) and Elizabeth P. Hoisington (right, with Mamie Eisenhower) the first female U.S. Army generals on  May 15, 1970.

On May 17, 2004, the first legal same-sex marriage in the United States takes place when Tanya McCloskey, 52, and Marcia Kadish, 56, say "I do" at City Hall in Cambridge, Mass. By day's end, scores of other same-sex couples tie the knot.

Televised Senate hearings on the  Watergate break-in begin  May 17, 1973.

Campaigning for the Democratic presidential nomination, Alabama Gov. George Wallace is shot on May 15, 1972, in a Maryland suburb of Washington, D.C. Unemployed laborer Arthur Bremer is convicted of the assassination attempt and serves 35 years in prison.

On May 14, 1970, students at Jackson State College in Mississippi upset over racial issues and the U.S. invasion of Cambodia face off with police. Shortly after midnight, police open fire, killing two students and injuring 12.

Arizona Diamondback Randy Johnson, 40, becomes the oldest pitcher in major league history to throw a perfect game on May 18, 2004. He pitches five more seasons.

The final episode of  Seinfeld airs  May 14, 1998. About 76 million viewers tune in, a number topped only by series finales of M*A*S*H and Cheers.
