This Week in Boomer History: Rolling Stones ... Bay of Pigs ... 'The Simpsons'

Notable events from our shared experience

The Rolling Stones, the band's self-titled debut album, is released by Decca Records in the U.K. on April 16, 1964, and climbs to No. 1. Slightly altered, the album is released in the U.S. on May 30 but never cracks the Top 10.

On April 17, 1964, Jerrie Mock arrives in Columbus, Ohio, in a Cessna 180 to complete the first solo round-the-world flight by a woman.

Walter Cronkite succeeds Douglas Edwards as anchor of the CBS Evening News on April 16, 1962.

Rachel Carson, widely considered the mother of the environmental movement, dies  April 14, 1964. Her landmark book  Silent Spring, published in 1962, is a manifesto against pesticides such as DDT.

A February 1993 attempt by federal agents to arrest religious sect leader David Koresh at the Branch Davidian compound near Waco, Texas, results in 10 deaths and a long siege. On April 19, 1993, during an FBI attack, the compound catches fire; 76 people, including Koresh, are found dead. In revenge exactly two years later, Timothy McVeigh bombs the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, killing 168 and injuring more than 500.

About 1,400 CIA-trained Cuban exiles launch the Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba on April 17, 1961, in a failed attempt to overthrow the government of Fidel Castro.

The Simpsons appear in a two-minute animated short on The Tracey Ullman Show on April 19, 1987. They've been with us ever since.
