Newt Gingrich On Fighting Health Care Fraud

Newt Gingrich, former Speaker of the House, joined Orlando@50+ attendees today to talk about one of his many initiatives: fighting health care fraud. His Center for Health Transformation has taken on the issue and proposed solutions to stop fraud and protect patients.
First, Gingrich gave several examples of what health care fraud can look like which, AARP North Carolina summed up recently as:
- Billing Medicare or another insurer for services or items you never got.
- Billing Medicare for services or equipment which are different from what you got.
- Use of another person's Medicare card to get medical care, supplies, or equipment.
- Billing Medicare for home medical equipment after it has been returned.
Gingrich is a strong advocate of implementing electronic billing as a way of catching suspicious trends and stopping fraud in its tracks. He described how savvy and in-touch fraudsters are and the financial appeal to targeting health care as a means to make a buck.
While policies are developed and companies do what they can to stop fraud that puts patients like you at risk, you can do plenty to stop fraud too. This article from AARP North Carolina gives you tips for identifying health care fraud as well as seven ways you can prevent fraud yourself!
