There’ll be no shortage of blockbuster movies this summer, but one I’m most looking forward to is Ricki and the Flash, the dramatic comedy starring Meryl Streep as a veteran rocker. If only she’d paid less attention to sex, drugs, and rock ’n’ roll, she realizes too late, and more to her all-but-abandoned children (one of whom is played by Meryl's real-life daughter Mamie Gummer).
The film doesn’t open until August 7, but Sony Pictures has already released the film’s first trailer (above). As a singer, Meryl (who wowed audiences with her Broadway-quality pipes in last year's Into the Woods) channels a mix of Patti Smith and Pat Benetar, with a dash of two Bonnies: Raitt and Tyler. As for the offstage Ricki — clearly paying the price of a life of hard living — a wide range of comparisons beckon.
At our Movies for Grownups Awards Benefit Gala last February, Meryl’s costar, Rick Springfield, hinted that the two of them get hot and heavy in the film. That alone may be worth the price of admission.
