If you enjoy munching on peanuts or using olive oil when you cook, you’re not just titillating your taste buds. You’re also consuming monounsaturated fats. Often called good fats, monounsaturated fats offer multiple health benefits, including reducing LDL cholesterol levels, a move that may help lower the risk of a heart attack or stroke.
Monounsaturated fats may also help your brain. In a study at the University of Illinois, researchers found that diets high in monounsaturated fats, such as the Mediterranean diet, are linked to greater levels of general intelligence (which includes verbal, numerical and mechanical skills). Plus, these diets may help improve memory and possibly slow cognitive decline, which can include Alzheimer’s disease, German researchers reported in June 2021.
Good sources of monounsaturated fats include nuts, olive oil, avocados, canola oil, and pumpkin and sesame seeds.
