In accepting the Oscar for best supporting actor last week, J.K. Simmons didn't dwell on thanking the Academy and the Whiplash crew. Instead, he exhorted, “Call your mom, dad everybody. If you’re lucky enough to have a parent or two alive, call them! Don’t text, don’t email. Call them. Listen to them for as long as they want to talk to you."
I have to confess that I am a film aficionado, particularly on films that center around the Latino experience in the U.S. With the film award season upon us, Latinos are being recognized for their talent and excellence on and behind the silver screen. And what a year it has been for Latinos in film.
We'd be remiss to not mention the Oscars for at least a moment, and what a show! The Oscars are still buzzing since the Sunday night festivities, with everyone going over the highlights and upsets that the awards ceremony brought to the table. Between Kate Winslet's father whistling to her during her acceptance speech for Best Actress, to Heath Ledger's family accepting his award for Best Supporting Actor, it was a night to remember.
