August 23rd, 2005: Hurricane Katrina forms over the Bahamas.
You'll see a lot of five-year-retrospectives on Katrina this week. (NYT on flood protection: Washington Post on HBO's documentary airing tonight). It's worth remembering that floodwaters are currently causing extreme damage in Pakistan (insane pictures here, here, and here) . As always, Red Cross has a donation link up.
Finally: From the AARP-assisted comeback of the Hollygrove neighborhood in New Orleans: "The hurricane completely wiped us out. But at the same time, I knew that it was also our chance to shine. I knew we could come back much stronger than we were before if we seized the moment."
