Black Gives Back: Inspiring A Community
By John Briley, February 17, 2011 08:47 PM
As part of our ongoing recognition of Black History Month, I thought it would be nice to highlight a black volunteering and philanthropic blog called Black Gives Back.
Created in 2007 by Washington, D.C., philanthropist Tracey Webb, the blog is a hub for African Americans to help dispel the misperception that they, as a demographic, reside only on the receiving end of charity and volunteer efforts.
Webb previously founded - and still runs - the Black Benefactors, a giving circle that provides grants to nonprofit organizations serving African American children, youth and families in the D.C. region. She says her goal is to "inspire you....to volunteer, to donate, to join a board, to support programs in your community, to mentor, to tutor ... and to spread the word about black giving."
Webb has published a handful of articles outside the blog, including one on the top 10 black philanthropy celebrities of all time.
Black Gives Back is not a volunteer matching site - for that you can always use Create The Good - but it does list charitable and volunteering-related events, some of which may be in your area.
Check it out and let us know what you think!
