En español | We’re teaming up with the Alzheimer’s Society, Challenge Works and other organizations to launch an international competition for companies developing technology to help people with dementia live more actively and independently.

The Longitude Prize on Dementia will award $5 million in grants and prizes to companies and teams using artificial intelligence to help people with dementia stay in their homes longer and live with more independence.

“AARP works every day to empower people to choose how they live as they age, and people living with dementia should also have that opportunity,” Sarah Lenz Lock, senior vice president of policy at AARP and executive director of the Global Council on Brain Health, said in a statement, adding that the contest will “help improve the quality of life for people with dementia and their caregivers.”

The contest is open through Jan. 26, 2023. U.S.-based competitors may also be invited to join the AARP Innovation Labs’ accelerator program, which offers courses and mentorship programs to help start-ups reach and support adults age 50 and older. A field of 23 participants will receive $90,000 grants to develop their concepts. Five finalists will then receive $342,000 grants to build their products, with the winning team receiving a $1.14 million grand prize.
