How AARP is Working for You

AARP Foundation lawyers have joined a pending class action lawsuit against the country’s largest servicers of reverse mortgages, alleging the companies saddled older borrowers with unlawful fees after improperly foreclosing on their homes.

The lawsuit was filed in federal court in New York on behalf of Sheila Dancy-Wilkins, her 93-year-old mother, Flora Mayweathers, and similar reverse mortgage borrowers around the country.

Home heating costs can take a big bite out of anyone’s budget in winter. With many Americans already struggling to pay for groceries and other necessities, AARP has been working to make sure older adults can afford to keep the heat on.

In states around the country, we’ve helped scale back unnecessary rate hikes and pushed for reforms to help older adults pay their utility bills and stay warm in their homes as temperatures dip.

More than 780,000 Medicare beneficiaries are paying significantly more in Medicare Part B premiums simply because they didn’t enroll when they first became eligible. AARP is supporting a bill that would place limits on those costly late penalties.

The bipartisan Medicare Economic Security Solutions Act would cap the amount of the penalty at 15 percent of the premium, regardless of how long a person delays enrolling, and limit how long it is charged.

Palliative care — specialized care for people with serious illnesses — can provide needed relief from pain, symptoms and stress while also making life a little easier for family caregivers. But too often those who would benefit from this type of care don’t receive it, in part because there aren’t enough doctors and nurses trained in how to provide palliative support.

AARP is supporting federal legislation that aims to change that. The bipartisan Provider Training in Palliative Care Act would let students pursuing careers in primary care through the National Health Service Corps (NHSC) defer their service for up to a year for palliative care training. The NHSC offers loans and scholarships in exchange for service in underserved communities.
