We’re rolling out a $4.5 million advertising and grassroots campaign urging lawmakers to finally take comprehensive action to lower prescription drug prices. We’ll be running TV and digital ads across the country, and our on-the-ground advocates will be helping Americans concerned about sky-high drug prices to email or call their elected officials.
“Our members will be out in force over the coming weeks to tell their senators that this is the time for action,” Nancy LeaMond, AARP executive vice president and chief advocacy and engagement officer, said in a statement. “Seniors are sick and tired of paying the highest prices in the world for their medications, and they are demanding change.”
Our recent petitions urging elected officials to act have collectively garnered more than 4 million signatures. And those efforts have elicited responses and promises of support from lawmakers across the country, including in New York, Virginia, Arizona and Connecticut.
The U.S. House last year passed legislation that included AARP’s top drug pricing priorities: allowing Medicare to negotiate drug prices, penalizing drug companies that increased prices faster than inflation and capping out-of-pocket costs on prescriptions, among other measures. But the package has stalled in the Senate, which has yet to act on a comprehensive set of drug pricing reforms. While Senate lawmakers have met for hearings to discuss high drug prices, they have yet to vote to send a bill to the president’s desk.
